Members of the North Massapequa Fire Department mourn the passing of Ex-Captain Fred Proverdi of Ladder Company 1, a life member of the department whose legacy of service to the Nation and the Department was nothing short of exemplary. "Ex-Captain Proverdi was an icon in our community and a true pillar in our department," North Massapequa Fire Department Chief James Maroldo said. "After valiantly serving this Nation in World War II, he went onto to display the same dedication... and bravery as a highly respected and beloved member of the North Massapequa Fire Department. His wisdom, affability, experience and kindness will sorely be missed. Fred was born in 1925 in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. After high school, he was accepted into Cooper Union College’s prestigious art program. Later, he joined the United States Navy and was a Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class on LST #48. A decorated combat veteran, he was on Utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion and was also at the invasion of France during World War II. Several years after the war, he married his wife Josephine in 1950 and moved on to North Rutherford Avenue in North Massapequa, where he lived for 68 years. They had one son, Ronald, who was also a respected member of the North Massapequa Fire Department and a Lieutenant in Ladder Company 1. Fred worked at Liberty Aircraft in Farmingdale before becoming a mailman for the North Massapequa branch of the United States Postal Service, where he worked for 30 years. Later, he worked for BOCES in the evening as a custodian for 10 years before finally retiring altogether to spend time doing what he loved best...painting. His artwork proudly hung in the post office lobby for years, in both the North Massapequa branch on Broadway and also the main Massapequa branch on Sunrise Highway. According to his family, Fred liked nothing more than to sit with an ice-cold beer and have a good conversation. He loved his two granddaughters and four great grandchildren and will be dearly missed. There will never be another Fred Proverdi. Chief Maroldo said. He was a hero to this nation and community, but always carried himself with great humility and was a true gentleman. @ North Massapequa, New York See more

As many in our community know, the truck room of the North Massapequa Fire Department’s headquarters, as well as its apparatus, was destroyed in an early morning Christmas fire. While this was a very difficult day for our members and, of course, our entire community, we want residents to be assured that they continue to be fully protected in the event of any emergency. Our substation on Hicksville Road is fully operational and prepared to rapidly respond to any fire or rescue... emergency. Additionally , neighboring fire departments have provided apparatus and offered logistical support as needed. Also, all levels of local government, including the Town Of Oyster Bay and Nassau County, have pledged their full cooperation and support. The timeline to rebuild our headquarters is still being determined. However, what is certain, is that we will come back better and stronger than ever. We thank all of our residents, and the surrounding community, who have come together to support us in the same manner that we have been there to assist our residents in their hour of need. As more information becomes available, we will certainly pass it on to the public. In the meantime, we wish everyone a happy and healthy new year. See more
