What encouraged you to join the Be The Match registry? Currently 2 out of 4 Hispanics/ Latinos patients will not find a donor. How do you think we can disrupt the disparity? I was encouraged to join the registry after my mom had received her lung transplant. I was so eager and inspired to give something back to the universe, after they had given me another chance to live out my days with her and conveniently enough, a few volunteers had come to my college shortly after a...nd began speaking about the impact of donation and about the many lives that could be saved if we just signed up to join the registry. I knew it was meant to be and decided to sign up because I knew what it was like to wait for that perfect match- my mother spent many years on the transplant waiting list and when we received the call, we just couldn't believe it. Of course, this was different to organ donation but still impacted the life of another person to spend more time with loved ones, create amazing memories and get to live their lives again. The process was easy, only a swab of the inside of your cheek, and I ran to class afterwards, feeling pretty good about the step I took to help out. I think we can disrupt the disparity by informing ourselves about the power of donation. The words "blood stem cell donation" can be a little scary, especially if we aren't fully aware of its process, function and impact. After countless research and asking many questions, I understood that joining the registry is a small step we can take to take care of our neighbors and to help one another during really difficult times. Donor of the month Frank; Several years ago, I was on my way to make a whole blood donation that was sponsored by MetLife in Long Island City, New York. There was a desk setup soliciting volunteers for Be The Match Program and without hesitation I immediately signed up. Since my very first blood donation I always held steadfast that being human is to support your fellow human being. However more importantly, at the end of the day no matter what race, religion, etc. you a...rewe are human beings and we are connected. It’s such a profound concept to say that I could save someone on this planet who may be in need by just making myself willing and available. Even though, I am one personI knew in my heart that there are people suffering in this world and if I have the ability to just move the needle (even if its just for a split second)I would do it. Years later, Be The Match contacted me and without hesitation I answered the call. I knew that all the testing, the events leading up to the donation was such a small price to pay to potentially save someone’s life (wherever they may be). I was often questioned by family, friends and strangers asking me Are you sure you want to do this? and every time without hesitation I’d always say I am ready when they are I am so proud to have been a part of this entire process and after my donation I literally said When’s round 2 I look forward to continue making regular [blood] donations and being available for Be The Match whenever needed.
