Diabetic retinopathy is a condition occurring in persons with diabetes, which causes progressive damage to the retina, the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye. It is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes. Often there are no visual symptoms in the early stages of diabetic retinopathy. That is why it is recommended that everyone with diabetes have a comprehensive dilated eye examination once a year. Early detection and treatment can limit the potential for significant vision loss from diabetic retinopathy.

La retinopatía diabética es una condición que se presenta en personas que sufren diabetes, la cual causa un daño progresivo a la retina, el recubrimiento sensible a la luz ubicado en la parte trasera del ojo. A menudo no hay síntomas visuales en las primeras etapas de la retinopatía diabética. Por este motivo, se recomienda que todas las personas que sufran de diabetes se sometan a un examen completo del ojo dilatado una vez al año. La detección y el tratamiento tempranos pueden limitar el potencial de pérdida significativa de visión causado por la retinopatía diabética.
