John Howe was an intrepid beekeeper in NYC and founder of the New York City Beekeeping. John was even the basis for Fred, the main character in a kids' picture book "The Honeybee Man, by Lela Nargi The Honeybee Man. His memorial will be held at The Church of Saint Luke in the Fields on Hudson street, Manhattan.... It will be held on April the 25th at 2pm. Please join us.

This seems too good to be true... how could a wax moth survive on a diet of plastic? It seems that they are not eating the plastic, but an enzyme they exude breaks it down. Do we want tiny microscopic particles of plastic everywhere? We think not.

The first two volumes Volume I: Standard methods for Apis mellifera research and Volume II: Standard methods for Apis mellifera pest and pathogen research were published in 2013 and have been well received. The COLOSS BEEBOOK Volume III: Standard methods for Apis mellifera hive products research is currently in preparation. The chapter Standard methods for Apis mellifera royal jelly research has now been published online. Royal jelly plays a critical role in caste determination in honey bees because it serves as the source of nutrition for young larvae destined to become queens, and is also fed to adult queens. Royal jelly possesses numerous functional properties and thus has been used as a medication, health food, and cosmetic in many countries. The chapter has been written by 21 authors from six countries, led by Fu-Liang Hu of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. In this paper, the authors first introduce a traditional method for producing royal jelly by artificial larvae grafting and a newly developed method that does not require grafting of larvae. Protocols for the storage and freeze-drying of royal jelly to preserve its biological properties are described, as are routine methods for determination of two important quality criteria, water content and trans-10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid content. Because royal jelly is susceptible to contamination with veterinary drugs and acaricides, methods for detection and quantification of some veterinary drugs and acaricides in royal jelly are also described.
