To everyone’s surprise, a polyglot works at one of the busiest fruit stands on Canal street. Everyone calls him Tony but his real name is Nery Perez. He doesn’t know how Tony started but he accepts it as a nickname. Nery came alone to America from Guatemala in 1999 and began his American dream in Chinatown. He started learning English as he began working at a local fruits distribution company. The company used to be in Chinatown then moved to Brooklyn. Yet, he was always sur...rounded by Chinese-speaking coworkers so he began to learn Cantonese as well. He said he first started with names of fruits so that he can do sales. Nery became more acquainted with the fruit vendors in Chinatown and began a new job with the Truong sisters at Mulberry st at Canal st. At this stand, everyone, including customers were all astonished by his capability in switching fluently to and from Spanish, English and Cantonese. Nery fell in love with one of the Truong sisters and started their own fruit stand. I like how Cantonese sounds, said Nery. When he encounters customers who speak Mandarin, he manages just fine by utilizing and altering his Cantonese vocabulary intelligently. Language acquisition is instinctive to him without needing proper instructions. According to the Foreign Service Institute from the Department of State, both Cantonese and Mandarin rank at Category IV which are two of the most difficult languages to learn for English speakers. Nery is a very reliable man and has a heightened sense of awareness. Many street vendors in the area often asks him to watch their stalls and he would never refuse. In many ways, he adds a great value to the street vendor community. #WAHintheFifth
