The Friend of The Council Award was created in 1996 and is given annually in recognition of a person or organizations contributions to The Council and the field of education. Our Distinguished Service Committee selected the NYSTRS as our 2021 Friend of The Council. NYSTRS serves our members through their well-managed fiduciary role and the retirement guidance they provide at our annual events. The award will be presented to Executive Director Thomas K. The Appreciation Award is given in recognition of an active member's efforts on behalf of The Council and its initiatives. This year we will honor Neil O’Brien, Superintendent, Port Byron for his leadership, dedication and work on Council committees, his support of emerging leaders and efforts of Council staff, his leadership on the LEAF, Inc. Board, and insight into legislative proposals and how they could affect schools. Neil was selected by our Distinguished Service Committee for his continued commitment to The Council for over 10 years.
