Happy International Pronouns Day! This day highlights the importance of respecting, sharing, and educating individuals about pronouns as a common, everyday practice. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is a basic human dignity. Being referred to with incorrect pronouns or a name that an individual doesn’t identify with (otherwise known as deadnaming) disproportionately impacts transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people. Sharing yo...ur pronouns is an easy way to communicate with others how you’d like to be identified and signals to others to do the same. For NYU specific pronouns tools, you can visit the Office of Global Inclusion Pronouns Toolkit https://www.nyu.edu//learning-and-d/toolkits/pronouns.html. You can find other tips on pronoun use from our posts, as well as mypronouns.org. #pronounsday NYU Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation NYU Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (NYU CMEP) New York University

On September 25, 1970, members of the NYU Gay Students Liberation group, in partnership with members of the New York Gay Liberation Front, led an occupation of NYU’s Weinstein Hall in response to the administration’s discriminatory conduct toward LGBTQ+ functions on campus. This five-day event was an open occupation where students, community activists, and other off-campus activist groups came and went from the residence hall, flyering the University, and holding public teach...-ins on gay liberation. This event had rippling effects advancing LGBTQ+ movements, including but not limited to, the formation of Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.), co-founded by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson who were also present at the occupation. Join the NYU LGBTQ+ Center within the Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation and the NYU LGBTQ+ Alumni Network for an intergenerational panel discussion on Sat. October 24, 2020 from 2:00 p.m.3:15 p.m. EDT. This discussion will include veterans from the occupation and recent/current LGBTQ+ student and staff leaders exploring the historical importance of the Weinstein Hall Occupation, what progress has been since the occupation, and ways we can continue to provide support for all members of LGBTQ+ communities at NYU into the future. Join us in recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day by reflecting on the land on which you occupy. Identify: Whose land was I born on? Whose land do I live on/occupy? Whose land do I vacation on/visit? This National Coming Out Day, we recognize the bravery and strength it can take to come out as LGBTQ+, as well as the fact that not everyone lives in circumstances that will allow them to safely come out. An LGBTQ+ person coming out can also be referred to as letting in, as it is a moment of letting others into a sacred part of one’s personal life. We also recognize that coming out is not a one-time thing, as most LGBTQ+ people must come out repeatedly and many experi...ence a fluidity in their gender and sexualities. We hope that today is a day of reflection, celebration, and healing for LGBTQ+ people, and that we can find opportunities to grow together as we continue to become ourselves. "The Office of Equity, Belonging, and Community Action at NYU Steinhardt, in collaboration with NYU Metro Center, Steinhardt Student Affairs, the Undergraduate ...Student Government (USG), and the Graduate Student Organization (GSO), will be holding space in response to the troubling grand jury decision not to indict the officers responsible for the murder of Breonna Taylor. We feel with you the elastic pain, continuing trauma, and numbing fatigue that yet another verdict has been handed down reinforcing the devaluation of Black womxn’s lives. We support and are committed to efforts to ensure that we are part of the solution that finally dismantles systemic intersectional racial injustice and violence. Indeed, we need a commitment, plan, and structure to make it happen. But we also need to hold space for each other, to give people room to feel and be seen and heard. In the coming months, the Office of Equity, Belonging, and Community Action will roll out new programs and services, which will include, among other things, a new Social Justice Resources page where you will find resources useful in our struggle for social justice, and a list of equity trainings our office will make available to our community. Transforming a broken system is a big undertaking and will require the involvement of many people to make an impact. It is important to stress the need to embed our culture and all we do with social justice strategies to dismantle structural racism and its many antecedents, without simply adding more tasks. In the spirit of systemic change, we want to utilize the strength of our office to enable change. This means that, in addition to offering resources and trainings, our office will set up people-powered committees to galvanize our collective genius and community cultural wealth, to hold us accountable, and to help create the change we wish to see. More immediately, we want to provide a space for you to both hear from one another and be heard, where you can share and discuss your stories, feelings, and experience with others. This space will be to discuss Breonna Taylor, humanize the value of Black (femme) lives and countless other victims of police brutality, the recent and current protests, and related topics. Justice for Breonna Taylor: A Listening and Healing Space for the Community: Friday, September 25 at 5:00pm to 6:30pm Please register for the event (https://bit.ly/33XEoLF) or email [email protected] for more details."
