This is my letter to Governor Cuomo addressing cannabis legalization in NY. I implore everyone to do the same. Links to issues referenced in my letter will be posted right after this one. Governor Cuomo, I am writing as one of your constituents to implore you to make significant changes to the Cannabis Regulation and Taxation Act (CRTA), or to abandon the legislation completely and give your unequivocal support to the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA)....Continue reading

Friendly Reminder- Have you contacted your state senator, assemblyperson, and governor concerning cannabis legalization in NY? Specificially, the importance of Passing MRTA and rejecting CRTA? It's no surprise that the medical cannabis companies operating in NY lobbied the governor heavily to support CRTA and oppose MRTA. This has nothing to do with health or safety. It's simply about control and profits. Corporate Fascism at it's finest. Mussolini would be proud. Just as thi...s farm opposes GMOs and the patenting of life, it also opposes the inane concept of a plant being exclusively owned and its use controlled by a corporation or government. There's only one chance to get this right. Do not be idle and allow more inordinate avarice to be codified into state law. "Legalization" with criminal penalties for possession and personal cultivation isn't legalization at all. See more

A note on winter squash, given how much cheap squash is out there this time of year... No Bees were killed in order to grow this squash Many commercial growers in this region use neonicotinoid insecticides to control pests that attack the squash family. Specifically, the insecticide imidacloprid, which is the most widely used insecticide in the world, and can be purchased at Himrod Farm Supply. These insecticides, which are chemically similar to nicotine, are linked to the w...orldwide collapse of bee populations. Imidacloprid works by being absorbed into the vascular system of the plant, where in lingers for up to a month. During this time, any insect that ingests any part of the plant, be it leaf material or pollen, ingests the chemical and is killed. Any re-application of imidacloprid during the flowering period of the plant's life cycle all but ensures that pollinating insects will be killed. If you see copious amounts of squash being sold for pennies per pound, there is a very high possibility that squash was grown using toxic chemicals, and pollinating insects were killed as a direct result. At Oak & Osage Farm, we use organic methods and physical barriers to protect young plants from insect damage. See our video on using row cover, and this season's video on surgical removal of vine borers. There is a high cost to cheap food. Educate yourself, and ask whether you want to be part of the problem, or the solution.

An in- depth look at how squash vine borers are managed in our organic system. Whereas in modern industrial agriculture a farmer's boot never sets foot in the soil and tractors are controlled via GPS, small- scale ecologically minded farms require presence and attention paid to plants at every stage of their growth. Many farms in the surrounding areas use neonicitinoid insecticides to grow vast quantities of squash; this chemical is linked to the worldwide decline in bee populations. When you purchase squash from Oak & Osage Farm, you can rest assured that no beneficial pollinators were harmed in the growth of any plant. Whether you like it or not, there are consequences to where and how you choose to feed yourself. Shop smart, eat local.
