It is with a profound sense of shock and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ex Captain, Current Department Treasurer & Fire District Dispatcher Vincent Calderone of Salamander Hook Ladder & Bucket Company #1. Vinnie worked the 8-4 shift at OFD Headquarters just yesterday and has been our steady weekday Dispatcher. Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife Lorrie and their son's, his Brother and fellow Truck 1 member Jimmy and their family and friends. Vinnie was set to retire in a few weeks and was finally planning his dream retirement in the Myrtle Beach, S.C. area. Our hearts are broken and we are once again left to question why? Rest In Peace to a dedicated Department member, District employee, husband, father, brother and one of the funniest guys you could ever hope to know.
At 6:35 this morning the OFD was alerted for a reported vehicle fire at the intersection of Long Beach Road and Poole Street. Responding units were quickly advised that there was a working street sweeper fire. Engine 249 from Columbia Engine Company #1 arrived first due with Engine 248 from Terrace Hose and Chemical Company #3 arriving shortly after. One hand line was stretched from the bumper of E249 to extinguish the fire while the crew from E248 conducted overhaul on the v...ehicle. After the fire was extinguished it was determined that hazardous liquids were leaking out of the engine of the vehicle, and the Nassau County Fire Marshalls Hazardous Materials unit responded to the scene. The incident was overseen by 1st Assistant Chief Charles Daskalakis. Later on, at 10:01 AM the Fire District Medics responded to an EMS call for a sick person and at 2:30 PM, we began receiving multiple calls for a building fire on Atlantic Avenue by Waverley Avenue. Units quickly got on the road and were advised by a former chief who was on scene that there was smoke showing. Engine 246 was first due, followed by Engine 249, Engine 247, and Engine 248, as well as Ladders 244 and 2442. Arriving units discovered an exterior rubbish fire next to a structure, with the fire knocked down with a garden hose. All units were released at 3:05 PM and were under the command of Chief of Department Joseph Caroccia. Photo credit to William E. Bennett!

A dark day that our Battalion lost a great Chief and better man. Continued Rest In Peace Chief, our thoughts are with your family and our Brothers and Sisters of the Freeport Fire Department.
2020 has been a year of never before seen challenges, hardship and loss for too many in our Country, Community and Department. Before we can welcome 2021, we need to look back and remember those we've lost, those who've stepped up and those who've struggled and to take a moment to be thankful for even though as a nation, a community and family we've struggled this year we've also seen countless acts of heroism, kindness and love. Our wish for you all is health, happiness and peace in 2021.
From our family to yours, wishes for Peaceful & Merry Christmas. Sending special prayers to all of those who have suffered or are suffering hardships this year and to all of our Firefighters, Paramedics and EMT's and their families... without you all there would be no Oceanside Fire Department.
We join with the entire Nassau County Fire Service in mourning the sudden loss of Nassau County Fire Communications (aka FireCom) Dispatcher Michael Biggs James, known to most as FireCom 63 or dispatcher 19 elsewhere in the County. Mike was one of the nicest guys you ever meet, a great dispatcher and gentle giant. Taken way too soon. RIP brother. Our thoughts are with our brothers and sisters at FireCom, the Hempstead FD and Mikes family.
Each year the various fire companies go around town with Santa to spread some holiday cheer and visit the members families and thank them for all the sacrifices they make to allow us to serve our department and community. This year the OFD feels we could ALL use a little more Christmas so we want to share our trip with EVERYONE! Santa will be going around town this evening and will be making a pre determined route as posted below, social distancing and masks will be used but you can come say hi and take a photo near Santa and his sleigh. Hope to see many of our friends and fellow Oceanside residents to say hi!
As we prepare for what is predicted to be our first significant snow in over a year and a half we remind you to please move cars off the street, limit travel as much as possible and PLEASE shovel out fire hydrants adjacent to your property. This can make a huge difference in the event of a fire on your block.
In addition to OFD Headquarters being a collection point for Toys for Tots, several wonderful groups are also helping those who are in need fbis holiday season. Please see the dates for each location. Today our Oceanside Library is collecting.
The Chiefs, Officers and Members of the Oceanside Fire Department wish all of our members, their families, friends and followers celebrating a Joyous Hanukkah!

The OFD is proud to join once again with the United States Marine Corps Reserve and our local partners to make the holidays brighter for less fortunate children. Our Toys for Tots contactless drop off area is now open in the lobby of Fire Headquarters at 65 Foxhurst Road between Long Beach Road and Oceanside Road. This year with so many reeling from the effects of Covid it is even more important to help those in need. Won't you please join with us and drop off a new and unwrapped toy this year?

From our family to yours, a very Happy Thanksgiving. In a year of sadness and uncertainty May we all take comfort in the blessing we have and pause today to give thanks for them.
Next Saturday from noon - 5 pm our Oceanside Sanitation will be having a food drive at their building, 90 Mott Street between Long Beach Road and Oceanside Road. Let's once again show how Oceanside supports our residents in need and turn out to support this!!!!
Although this year there is no parade, no big BBQ's or picnics including our own firehouse get togethers and although we are still in nerve-wracking uncertain times, one thing never changes... our Nation's never ending debt to those who gave their lives to protect our freedom and the American way! God Bless them all, we will NEVER FORGET!
On Thursday evening the OFD responded mutual aid to the Island Park Fire Department for a working house fire. Chiefs and Ladder 2442 went to the scene as the FAST Truck and Engine 249 and Ambulance 242 stood by at Island Park Headquarters to protect the village in the event of another assignment. All Oceanside companies stood by in their quarters and all units were back in service in approximately one hour. In times of uncertainty and sadness, music has always provided comfort and puts a soundtrack to our lives in both good and bad times... here is one of our own, Ex Captain Patrick Logan from Terrace Hose Company # 3. What an amazing message for these times, way to go Patrick!
Governor Andrew Cuomo has just announced that ALL colleges and schools in New York State will remain closed for the rest of this school year. We sympathize with all of this students, teachers and employees who are missing their daily routine, friends and colleagues. Our thoughts are especially with the OHS Class of 2020 whose Senior years have been decimated by this pandemic.

Today we salute the hardworking men of Oceanside Sanitation! Through every challenge our community faces the drivers, loaders, mechanics and office staff at District 7 are always there to help us clean up and recover. Poor weather, impatient drivers and TONS of garbage each day are a huge challenge and we thank you all for your service to our residents! Stay safe men!
On April 14,1989 Assistant Chief Dominic "Bubba" Lagudi of Columbia Engine Co. # 1 succumbed to injuries sustained in the line of duty at a working structural fire on Long Beach Road at Davidson Avenue. Please take a moment today to reflect on Chief Lagudi's Supreme Sacrifice and to think of his family, friends and the O.F.D. where we all miss him terribly. Rest in Peace Chief.
