As we near closer to #lightsonafterschool, today, we focus on PAL Poetry Jam! Each year, PAL organizes a poetry contest for young people in all centers. Last year, over 300 poems were submitted in both English and Spanish; only 20-30 are chosen and then sent to a poetry house for review. PAL participants are also asked to submit drawings through an art contest; the artwork is then matched up with the poems. Both artwork and poems are compiled into an amazing anthology! The @ccecornell Choose Health: Food, Fun and Fitness (CHFFF) became a part of PAL's virtual curriculum when Covid-19 closed PAL centers in Spring 2020. Dana Wheeler, PAL's Director of Education and Program Development worked with the Cornell Cooperative Extension to help PAL kids stay heathy and active during this time. When the pandemic gripped NYC, I understood that this program could make a big impact on our youth participants, Ms. Wheeler said. Normal life for our youth had drastically changed, and we wanted to give them the opportunity to continue a connection to our staff, their friends, and the PAL network. As part of #LightsOnAfterschool, we are focusing on some unique aspects of PAL's after-school programs during the month of October. This week, we introduce you to PAL's Junior Police Club. Members of the NYPD volunteer their time at PAL Centers with a special group called the Junior Police Club. Participants learn what it is like to become a police officer and their annual Jamboree takes place each year with young people from all centers performing drills that normally only NYPD recruits would learn! These police volunteers are working to help to bridge the gap between our young people and communities. #lightsonPAL #NYC #NYPD

Today is International Day of the Girl, dedicated to supporting and empowering girls worldwide to reach their full potential. At PAL, girls participate in every activity available! Young women in these programs improve their confidence and learn to let their voices be heard. On October 22, PAL will celebrate #LightsOnAfterschool. This nationwide event draws attention to after-school programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. This year's event calls attention to the importance of after-school programs and the resources required to keep the lights on and the doors open. It is organized by the Afterschool Alliance, nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all children have access to after-school programs.
