On January 17, 1965, Rabbi Arthur Schneier presided over a demonstration on behalf of Soviet Jewry at Park East Synagogue, dedicating the bronze plaque affixed to its facade facing the Soviet Mission, which reads: Hear the Cry of the Oppressed - The Jewish Community in the Soviet Union. Rabbi Schneier called upon religious leaders in the United States to join in setting up a united front with the Jewish community for the purpose of appealing to the Soviet Government to restore religious liberty and freedom of cultural expression to the three million Jews of that country. He was joined by Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Mayor Robert Wagner, and a speech by Senator Jacob K. Javits as well as telegrams of support from Governor Nelson Rockefeller and Vice President Hubert Humphrey were read aloud.
