For the 103rd consecutive year, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has placed a wreath on the tomb of George and Martha Washington... in their memory. I am honored to say that not even a pandemic could keep us from honoring this tradition. A glorious day at this storied place. (I will next post a video of the short service. ) See more

It is a glorious day here in the District of Columbia, though the streets and memorials remain eerily empty. Join me for a walk around the neighborhood, as I ta...ke you to the OAS, Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Vietnam Nurses Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Signers of Declaration of Independence Monument and statues near our headquarters .... before returning home to 18th Street and DAR Constitution Hall. What an outstanding capital city we share! I am admittedly partial, but I believe that ours (featured earlier in the week) are some of the most beautiful buildings in DC. See more

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission has designated the month of August as National Women’s Suffr...age Month! Throughout the month, DAR will be highlighting the suffrage movement on our @TodaysDAR Facebook page. Over the past year, DAR members have been commemorating the centennial of the amendment granting women the right to vote throughout their communities to encourage people to learn more about this important part of American history. If you are interested in learning more, the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission is sharing a series of digital programming about the women’s suffrage movement: https://www.womensvote100.org/celebrate #DARCelebratesSuffrage

Earlier this week, Daughters of the American Revolution National Headquarters launched the Honoring Our Patriots website, which will become the preeminent source for those who are searching the individual men and women who achieved American independence. Though still in development, you will find information on DAR's Pathway of the Patriots, the Genealogical Research System, and Forgotten Patriots, focused on the important contributions made by African American and American Indian patriots. Visit the Honoring Our Patriots website here: http://honoringourpatriots.dar.org/

DAR’s Opening Night Ceremony of the Virtual 129th Continental Congress was a great success! If you didn't get a chance to view it last night, you can view the ...full ceremony here: https://youtu.be/kTxTP6UfTUU. It was a special pleasure to "virtually" honor our keynote speaker and recipient of the DAR History Award Medal, Lonnie Bunch, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Secretary Bunch served previously as the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture here in our nation’s capital. He is credited as the driving force behind the success of the museum, which has welcomed more than 6 million visitors and helps all Americans to better understand the myriad contributions of African Americans to our nation’s story. As the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian, he now oversees 19 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo, numerous research centers, and several education units and centers. View his remarks here.

From our Conservation Committee Chairs: National Pollinator Week is June 22 - 28! DAR Daughters are champions of pollinator initiatives and this week we celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. Declining pollinator populations are an urgent issue. Pollinators including birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles are vital to our food sources and sustain our local ecosystems which in turn is vital to our own health and safety. Make your yard ...pollinator friendly by planting native plants, removing invasive species, and following these tips from New Castle Pollinator Pathways: Create a way-station for pollinators! Plant native pollinator-friendly trees, shrubs, and perennials! Provide a source of clean water leave some dead wood and dirt patches for nesting bees Rethink your lawn. Leave the clippings on the grass as fertilizer rather than adding chemicals Leave the leaves--many pollinators overwinter in leaf matter Consider the use of slow-release organic fertilizers or none at all Reduce lawn size by adding native plants Mow less often No need for pesticides! This means a healthy lawn for your children and pets too!
