Yesterday’s events in Washington are a stark reminder that our nation has a lot of healing to do not just around politics and democracy, but around the issues of class, privilege, and, yes, race. We’re thankful to live in a city where some of those tough conversations and healing efforts are underway. That’s why we’re once again participating in Kingston Reads a volunteer initiative that explores the topics of race and racism through books, guest speakers, and monthly co...mmunity discussions (now via Zoom). During the first session (January 21), moderators Erica Brown, Charlotte Adamis, and Shaniqua Bowden will lead a conversation about race, health care & healing. The recommended (but not required) books for this discussion My Grandmother’s Hands; Dying of Whiteness; and Killing the Black Body are now 10% at Rough Draft. For the second session (February 18), discussion will be inspired by Isabel Wilkerson’sCaste:The Origins of Our Discontents. Conversations in 2021 will be held every third Thursday. An early candidate for several Book of the Year lists, out today: The Prophets, by Robert Jones, Jr. A tale of love between two enslaved men on a Mississippi plantation, and the consequences of that forbidden love for them and those around them. ... Epic in its scale, intimate in its force, and lyrical in its beauty. The Prophets shakes right down to the bone what the American novel is, should do, and can be. Marlon James We’ve got a nice tall stack of this new one and many more. Open 8-6. #newtitletuesday #newreleasetuesday #pubday #debutnovel #theprophets #bookstagram #stacks #booksandcoffee #latteart #coffeeandbooks #ReadSipRepeat #kingstonny
