This is a link to an interesting New York Times article that sums up the stolen car spree that is being experienced nationwide and specifically in Rye Brook. https://www.nytimes.com//01/06/nyregion/car-thefts-nyc.html In 2019 there were 7 cars reported stolen in Rye Brook; in 2020 there were 17 cars reported stolen. A jump of 10 cars in one year, the most cars ever stolen in Rye Brook during a 12 month period. ... Every car that was reported stolen was unlocked and the key or fob was left in the car. That is how the thieves are able to start and steal cars. The technology found in car keys and fobs make it virtually impossible to steal a car without it, but ironically the keys and fobs are the reason that cars are stolen at such an alarming rate. People do not lock their cars and continue to leave their key or fob inside the car. Sometimes the thieves use the stolen car for transportation and joyride in it. There are situations where the stolen car is used to commit other crimes. For example, in one car that was stolen from an address in Rye Brook, bullet casings were found inside the car which indicated that a gun was fired while it was stolen. In another case, blood was found in a car and it was concluded that an occupant was shot while in that car. Lock your car, take your keys and don’t be the cause of an innocent person falling victim to a crime involving your stolen car.
