Summer Arts in Berlin! The Cool and the Cold. Painting in USA and the UdSSR 19601990 We mark the 30th anniversary of German reunification this summer. The Gropius Bau will host a group exhibition uniting paintings created during the Cold War in both centres of global political power, including works by Andy Warhol, Il’ja Kabakov, Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler and Erik Bulatov. We look forward to spending time with students in this major exhibition, reflecting upon the political implications of what appears to be non-political art.

Interested in Creative Writing in Berlin? Berlin’s SAND Journal publishes and promotes English literature and art that's as diverse, experimental, and subversive as Berlin itself, the city it calls home. On and off the page, Sand focuses on building community, increasing the diversity of voices that are heard, and taking risks with the form and content of what they print. A gem of a literary magazine, recognized far beyond Germany. More about it, https://sandjournal.com/ AND... SAND’s Editor-in-Chief is no other than SLC alum, Jake Schneider. During SLC’s Summer Arts in Berlin, Jake talks to Creative Writing students about small literature magazines, writing, submitting, living as an expat, translating--and curating. Jake graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in creative writing and languages, received a fellowship from the US National Endowment for the Arts to translate Ron Winkler’s poetry collection Fragmented Waters. He has been translating full-time since 2012 with focuses on literature, arts, and academic writing, especially on LGBTQ+ and Jewish themes. As editor in chief of SAND: Berlin’s English Literary Journal, he oversees a 17-person team that publishes two annual issues and hosts regular literary events. See more: http://jakeschneider.eu/

Summer Arts in Berlin! For students interested in our Visual Arts & Architecture track, here’s some news about our Drawing Instructor, Lara Faroqhi. Lara has been collaborating with the renowned Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra for the last several years in the Music Meets Art program, blending tone sound and color, exploring rhythm in both music and visual arts, and looking into moods and mood creation. Various projects such as performances and short films have resulted. Now ...she has collaborated on a book aimed at the 3-5 year old audience, describing the tonality of color, just released! In the fall of 2019, Lara was part of a group show in London, ‘Artists for Blue’, a collaboration of BLUE scientists and artists aimed at saving the ocean. Lara is represented in London by Lockbund Gallery, take a look at her profile here. https://www.lockbundgallery.com/lara-faroqhi-artist. She also exhibits at the Guardini Foundation in Berlin, as a solo artist and in group shows. Students on the Visual Arts track in Berlin have been impressed by her honesty, supportive nature, her nudging students to go beyond their comfort zones, and doing that with a broad understanding of all genres of art and the humans who make it.

What to do while on our Summer Arts in Berlin 2020 program. Berlin is best known for a wide-ranging and always-full calendar of arts and music ‘Indie Events’ events that fall out of main mainstream and high art venues. Anything from small record launches to very unusual food events, Open Mics, Queer Events, off-scene art happenings, club specials, book presentations in bizarre locations, fashion presentations, Freaky Fridays at Madame Claude, life-drawing at Berlin’s hottest club on Sunday mornings-after. All unique and usually inexpensive if not free! Take a look at Indie/Berlin website: https://www.indieberlin.de/events/list/
