Have you ever wished upon a shooting star? These brilliant spectacles may seem rare, but there are plenty of shooting stars coming our way later this month! Shooting stars, also known as meteors, originate from bits of rock called meteoroids that get left behind by comets as they orbit the Sun. At certain times of year, the Earth will pass through these trails of debris. Those bits of rock and dust enter the Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds, sometimes over 100,000 ...miles per hour! Friction in the atmosphere causes the meteoroids to burn up and glow, creating a meteor. Every October, the Earth passes through a trail of dust left by Comet Halley, causing the Orionid meteor shower. Meteor showers can last several weeks, but this month the Orionids will reach their peak on the night of October 20th, producing up to 20 meteors per hour. Meteor showers get their names from the constellations that the meteors appear to come from in the night sky, so the Orionids will appear to fly out of the constellation Orion.
