Though her work refers to historical practices, for Shahzia Sikander it ‘never was a decision to be a traditional artist.’ The exhibition ‘Weeping Willows, ...Liquid Tongues’ at Sean Kelly Gallery continues and extends the efforts of the artist to develop an iconography which ‘counters a very narrow definition of the other, whatever the other may be.’ Watch the full film on frieze.com https://www.frieze.com//shahzia-sikander-questions-opposit

Shahzia Sikander, Weeping Willows, Liquid Tongues opens today! For her inaugural exhibition at Sean Kelly, Sikander questions the opposition of the traditional and the avant-garde. Though her work refers to historical practices, for #ShahziaSikander it ‘never was a decision to be a traditional artist.’ Her question, as she explains in this video, was rather ‘who determines what is tradition.’ The exhibition comprises painting, video, mosaic and her first freestanding sculp...ture, all continuing and extending her efforts to develop an iconography which ‘counters a very narrow definition of the other, whatever the other may be.’During her upbringing in Pakistan during the country’s second period military rule, art ‘became like a fuel’ says Shahzia Sikander. New series of paintings in this exhibition, inspired by the technology of oil extraction in the Persian Gulf, offer, she says a ‘counter-narrative’ of abundance, creativity and imagination to ‘something that is extractive’. Growing out of her efforts to develop movements from iconography, Sikander describes the kinetic forms in her most recent video animation,Reckoning(2020), as inspired by ‘the idea of struggle’ between categories, ‘whether it’s power and powerlessness, whether it’s migrant and the local.’ Not passively accepting these as simple oppositions, Sikander instead seeks to ‘actively engage’ them. ‘You have to pull apart those categories’, she says. @shahzia.sikander @frieze_magazine #WeepingWillowsLiquidTongues #SeanKellyNY #FriezeFilms

Happy Birthday to Julião Sarmento! This work is featured in Architecture into Art: A Dialogue at the Centro Botin, on view through March 14, 2021 The work of Modernist architects have inspired a series of works by Juliao Sarmento, who trained as an architect before turning to art. ‘In his painting, architecture has a very strong presence, and not only on a literal level but also in relation to the construction of his pictorial space,’ says Benjamin Weil. For instance, the tit...le of the canvas Neutra Blue Lilies (2011), one of a specific series of works begun around 2009-10, refers to the Austrian architect Richard Neutra, a major contributor to the shaping of the Los Angeles landscape as a mecca for a laid-back lifestyle in contact with nature, pioneering the use of new materials in residential architecture, something that Sarmento incorporates almost as an image in his painting. Many of the Los Angeles houses that captivated Sarmento with their morphology, their organic construction, the purity of their lines and their Minimalist aesthetic have become authentic icons, and some have had a significant cinematic presence as film sets, such as the Neutra house we see in Curtis Hanson’s 1997 L.A. Confidential, based on the neo-noir novel of the same name by James Ellroy. Neutra Blue Lilies, 2011, Polyvinyl acetate, pigments, acrylic, acrylic gypsum, Chinese ink, graphite, and serigraphy on cotton canvas 195 x 185 x 6 cm

Sean Kelly is delighted to participate in TEFAF Online New York. The gallery will present Shahzia Sikander’s first ever free-standing sculpture, Promiscuous Intimacies. November 1 - 4, 2020 With its sinuous entanglement of the Greco-Roman Venus and the Indian Devata figures, Sikander’s first sculpture in bronze explores the ‘promiscuous intimacies’ of multiple times, spaces, art historical traditions, bodies, desires, and subjectivities. The two female protagonists are modele...d on the goddess in Bronzino’s, An Allegory with Venus and Cupid and an Indian Devata figure in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work takes its title from an essay by Gayatri Gopinath in the forthcoming monograph, Shahzia Sikander: Extraordinary Realities, in which she writes, In their suggestive embrace, the intertwined female bodies bear the symbolic weight of communal identities from across multiple temporal and geographic terrains. They evoke non-heteronormative desires that are often cast as foreign and inauthentic and instead challenge the viewer to imagine a different present and future. This backward glance demands that we understand ‘tradition,’ ‘culture’ and ‘identity’ as impure, heterogeneous, unstable, and always in process, disrupting taken-for-granted national, temporal, and art historical boundaries. Promiscuous Intimacies will be featured in Shahzia Sikander’s solo exhibition Weeping Willows, Liquid Tongues on view at the gallery from November 5 December 19, 2020. #TEFAF Online New York 2020

Sun Xun was commissioned to make this new work, July Coming Soon, by the Asia Society Museum, New York for the inaugural Asia Society Triennial:We Do Not Dream Alone, which opens today and is on view through February 7, 2021. #SunXun’s practice considers the lingering impact of the Cultural Revolution on Chinese society, the subjective nature of global history, and the disjunction between personal experience and officially recorded events. His surreal narratives, realized th...rough a broad range of mediums including animation, drawing, painting, and site-specific installation, deftly appropriate Song-dynasty and western-painting techniques to create animals and other allegorical characters that inhabit dreamlike alternate universes. July Coming Soonis a twenty-four-page folding album that was created for the Triennial as part of a special project by guest curator Susan L. Beningson, Ph.D., entitledWe the People: Sun Xun and Xu Bing Respond to the Declaration of Independence.Sun Xun takes inspiration from the Declaration of Independence to rebuke the current Administration of the United States and inventory the collateral damage caused by its policies. A winged monster featuring the visage of Donald Trump slinks away from an apocalyptic scene replete with an image of the Statue of Liberty in ruins and a globe hurtling to the ground in flames.
