Today UNITED AIRLINES recognized Dr. John Shiau and PA Danielle Ruggiero for their valiant efforts aboard flight 1142 from Seattle - New York on March 3. 2014. During the course of the overnight flight, three separate passengers became dangerously ill and were found unresponsive. While working together as a team, Dr Shiau and PA Ruggiero were able to effectively resuscitate and stabilize all three patients, avoiding flight diversion and getting the passengers back to New York... for further treatment. Their message to all potential travelers : 1. Always keep a list of any medical conditions, allergies and medications close by for emergency medical situations. 2. Stay hydrated prior to lengthy flights. 3. If you aren't feeling well prior to the flight, consider changing your travel plans. A medical emergency at 20,000 feet is not ideal, but if you take care of yourself and follow these basic steps an inflight resuscitation shouldn't be part of your future!
