Did you know that AEDs can be temperamental in extreme conditions such as cold temperatures? . Cold weather can significantly change the performance of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from freezing the water-based gel found inside the pads to draining the battery life in the unit. . Each manufacturer will have an operating temperature range listed in the manual or data sheet. This range is typically listed as 32F to 122F for most units.... . If you plan to store your AED outside or in extreme cold/hot environments for long periods of time, be sure to stay within the range of the recommended operating temps given by the manufacturer as well as routinely check the unit for readiness. . Always be prepared to respond flawlessly See more

Questions you should ask yourself: - If a vacuum splint fails and no other option is available, what do I use? - What is the plan when ROSC is not achieved during a sudden cardiac arrest situation?... - How can I make communication smoother with EMS during an emergency situation? - What are some tools in order to differentiate between a distracting injury and a life threatening one? . Some questions you should be able to answer after completing our program! . It’s official, sports are back in New York! Well...sort of. New York State has allowed high schools to return to athletics in a modified type of way. Football and volleyball will have to wait until the spring but soccer, tennis, cross country, and many other sports have resumed! . . Did you know that a majority of the instructors here at SMC (including Mike Cendoma, CEO) are Certified Athletic Trainers working in many different settings including collegiate and high school... athletics? . . The return of athletics means the world to us here at SMC and we are excited to see so many healthcare professionals that we have worked with in the past back on the sidelines doing what they love! . Athletic trainers and team medical personnel face many challenges as they try to navigate COVID-19 protocols and keep athletes, and themselves, safe. Some of these challenges have direct implications for emergency action planning and response, including personal protective equipment (PPE), new American Heart Association (AHA) changes to the BLS CPR algorithm, and acclimatization of deconditioned athletes. In this issue of Sports Medicine Concepts’ Sports Emergency Care Digest we offer some suggestions based on intelligence we have gathered during simulation training that athletic trainers and team medical personnel may find useful. The staff here at Sports Medicine Concepts is working hard to provide useful data on football helmets and how they may hinder, or assist quality of emergency care during any situation. . . This week, we will be filming an RPSH (Record of Perceived Safe Handling) on the Riddell SpeedFlex Diamond football helmet. .... . The RPSH is an anecdotal instrument used to compare a product, protocol, or technique against a standard condition. The standard condition is an entry level athletic trainer tending to a non-equipment laden athlete in an emergency situation. In this specific situation, we put the Riddell SpeedFlex Diamond helmet on our simulator and ran through a variety of emergency situations to review how the helmet may aid or hinder the process of an athletic trainer. . Stay tuned for the full RPSH coming to our YouTube channel soon! . To make sure you don’t miss it, go to our YouTube channel and hit that subscribe button and turn on the notifications! . . __________________________ #sportsmedicineconcepts #smc #rpsh #riddellspeedflex #riddelldiamond #emergencycare #athletictraining #criticalcare #youtube See more

Another Staff Introduction! This is Amanda Sheflin (we call her Mandy). Mandy grew up near Saratoga Springs and came to WNY to go to school at SUNY Brockport to pursue a career in athletic training. She graduated in 2008 and has been working in the area for Village Physical Therapy & Fitness ever since. She has worked at many of the local high schools but most recently had been mainly at LeRoy High School. Mandy chose athletic training because she grew up playing sports and... knew what it was like to not have a medical professional on the sidelines. She wanted to help athletes avoid injuries and be healthier to stay in the sports they love for as long as they want. As for Sports Medicine Concepts, her title is Content Coordinator. Her role here at SMC consists of organizing and creating content for our many platforms such as our podcasts, sideline reviews, RPSH’s, etc. Mandy is a great asset to SMC and we are lucky to have her! . . _________________________ #meetourstaff #sportsmedicineconcepts #athletictraining #sportsmedicine #criticalcare #contentcoordinator #staffintroductions #meettheteam #smc See more
