As we look to removing statues of white supremacists, we must also harness the power of design to attend to the faceless monuments of infrastructure. Though banal, they are hardly benign. Feeling nostalgic, we asked alums what they miss most about the DCrit studio space and their time at SVA. If you’re interested in hearing more from alums about our MA program, register to attend our upcoming Info Session for Prospective Students this Tuesday, December 1, 12-1:30pm (registration link in bio). #designstudies #designresearch #design #sva #svadesignresearch #gradschool @ SVA MA Design Research, Writing & Criticism

Another alumni update: Tiffany Lambert (class of 2013) is the Assistant Curator @japansociety where she co-curated From Here to There, an online project featuring three contemporary artists, Nobutaka Aozaki, Hanako Murakami, and Aki Sasamoto. Initiated as an alternative platform within the extraordinary context of 2020, the show reveals new commissions over time. Materials accumulate monthly to present disciplinary encounters that span drawing, film, performance, and photo...graphy. Aside from her curation, Tiffany interviewed MoMA curator Paola Antonelli for the new Fall/Winter 2020-21 issue of @pinupmagazine, is an editor on the upcoming "Seeing Sori Yanagi (Phaidon Press, expected 2021), and teaches design history, design theory, and design studio for graduates and undergraduates at RISD and the Pratt Institute. The pull quote is from a fantastic article for PIN-UP 26 titled, Trash Aesthetics: Mining the Debris of Post-Industrial America. #curator #svadesignresearch #designwriter #pinup #sva #design

Another update from our latest Alumni Newsletter: Justin Zhuang (class of 2015) recently relaunched the Singapore Graphic Archives @graphic.sg, an online archive that collects graphic design materials and documents visual culture from Singapore dating back to the 1950s. The archive, originally founded by Justin in 2011 as the Singapore Visual Archive, was started with a mission to encourage a critical appreciation of graphic design and visual culture in Singapore. Another S...ingapore-centered project by Justin is When Cooking Was a Crime, a forthcoming book on illegal cooking in Singapore prisons during the 1970s and 1980s, published by Justin and wife Sheere Ng's studio In Plain Words, and due out this December (scroll to see spreads from the book) In addition to these projects, Justin has written articles this year for @framemagazine (scroll to see quote from article) and @aigaeyeondesign as well as working on two books with @thamesandhudson, including Mok Wei Wei: The Works of W Architects (2020), and Control Chaos: Redefining the Visual Cultures of Asia, due to release in January 2021. #singapore #singaporedesign #singaporefood #designresearch #sva #svadesignresearch #designwriting @ Singapore
