Why do we have Black Breastfeeding Week? Here’s why: Black Breastfeeding Week was created because of the long-standing racial disparities seen in breastfeeding ...rates. CDC data shows that 75% of white women versus 58.9% of black women have ever breastfed. The BBW website states, The fact that racial disparity in initiation and even bigger one for duration has lingered for so long is reason enough to take 7 days to focus on the issue. Visit our website for a breakdown of the top 5 reasons why we need BBW: https://buff.ly/31oQq0F This week, we will be sharing our support for #BBW20 on all our social media channels! Happy Black Breastfeeding Week!
Hello Friends! I hope everyone is doing well. I miss seeing my clients in person, and in the meantime I'm working with families remotely. One of the things that is hard for everyone is not being able to get your baby weighed when you see me. I have a few home baby scales that I have been dropping off to local clients to help us get more information for how to create a care plan, and those scales have been very helpful! I'd love to find/borrow/buy more scales for my clients to use while we work together. If you or someone you know has a baby scale you are no longer using, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.

I have learned that local hospitals are separating newborn infants from their families if the birthing parent has (or is suspected to have) #COVID19 (#coronavi...rus), and that #breastfeeding is not being allowed. These hospitals are citing the April 4, 2020 guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (#AAP). The World Health Organization (#WHO) recommends that direct breastfeeding should continue as long as the parent is following precautions (wear a mask and follow meticulous hand washing guidance ). In fact the WHO goes so far as to strongly advocate for rooming-in, skin-to-skin and breastfeeding in cases of confirmed or suspected COVID-19. This is in stark contrast to the AAP’s guidelines. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (#CDC) guidelines are middle of the road between what the AAP and WHO are recommending. If you are delivering at a hospital and have been told that your baby will be separated from you because you have a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19, I urge you to read over the statements of the AAP, CDC and WHO (linked below). The AAP statement specifically gives guidance for breastfeeding and rooming in IF REQUESTED BY THE MOTHER/BIRTHING PARENT. Please prepare yourself to make an informed choice should you deliver your baby under these conditions! Just like infants cannot use blankets and pillows, they CANNOT use masks. Please share widely! Keep our babies safe! Updated to clarify: There are exceptions to... every rule. When under the care of a doctor, medical infant masks made specifically for them may be appropriate when directed by a healthcare professional. See more
