A good jazz friend Kenny called and said another good friend, William Murphy, passed away yesterday in Ohio. I met Murphy at a 2004 Coltrane tribute held by Pap...py Martin where Murphy stood and improvised music that made perfect sense, that boldly expressed musical intelligence and deep human emotion. That was the deal with Murph, he brought new angles of melody and rhythm to a jam session, a Big Band rehearsal or a small group. Murphy’s methodology of swing and wonderful sense of humor is a gift he gave to all of us to remember. Ask CMC president George Scott or any saxophonist or ANY jazz musician about Murphy’s contribution and leadership. See more
We have just received word of the passing of our long time friend, Mr. William Murphy. He was a life time member of the club, and was very active in our many Sunday night jam sessions and our jazz festivals throughout the years. He loved working with our youth, and was always humble with the many greats he had performed with throughout the years. We at the club send our deepest condolences to all his family, extended family, and his musical family whom he loved so very much.
Dr . Lonnie L. Smith is sick please send cards /flowers whatever you like. His address is 6100 N W 33RD. Way. FT. LAUDERDALE FL. 33309
I was alone on a quiet Saturday afternoon in the museum when the cast of "Marshall" with the star of the movie "Chadwick Boseman" who would shortly after this become the biggest Star in Hollywood with "Black Panther" but with that said on his day off and out of all the places he could had gone in Buffalo, he came to the Club! It was truly a blessing that I will always treasure! We, at the Historic Colored Musician’s Club, are all saddened by the loss of a great... actor, whose work made so many people of color proud of who they are and for others. He showed us that if given a chance, we can achieve greatness for the world to see and share! ~George Scott~ RIP Chadwick Bosman. Thank you for gracing us with your presence, and essence of light and good will to all.
