Memory Monday: Tom Carr and family visited The Hyde Collection recently. Tom is Human Services Director with the Adirondack Mountain Reserve of the Ausable Club. Tom shared with staff that he grew up with artist Max Weber’s son. They coached basketball together and remained friends for over 30 years until Max passed away. Carr shared that he has many fond memories of the Weber family, the great artist, and his son, over the years. It brought back fond memories for Tom to view our Modern and Contemporary Feibes & Schmitt Gallery during their visit. Max Weber’s (1881-1961) lithographs, Spuyten Duyvil, French Model, and Two Chassids are held in the Permanent Collection, currently in storage. #MaxWeber #AusableClub #AdirondackMountainReserve #ModernArt #JewishArt #MemoryMonday #MuseumLife #MuseumFromHome #modernart

Happy Hanukkah! Yesterday marked the beginning of the Festival of Lights! From now until December 18, the Jewish community will celebrate the Miracle of the Oil or Miracle of the Lights. The traditional Menorah has nine lights, with one lit each night that goes by, and one to be used as the helper candle, to help light the others in their turn. For over one hundred years, the Jewish community has maintained a sizable congregation, now having two local synagogues, which are... both very active in our local Glens Falls Community. We thank Jewish friends for their support of the Hyde and their many important contributions to Glens Falls. Happy Hanukkah, and peace be with you in the New Year! Monday was the birthday of artist Peter Max (October 19, 1937) whose silkscreen and acrylic work, Liberty, now commands the entry to the Feibes and Schmitt Gallery, for the current Modern and Contemporary exhibit. German-American artist and cultural icon, Peter Max is widely known for his use of brilliant color. Known for psychedelic and pop art, his sense of design endures, and is iconic of the 1960 and 70s. Liberty is part of The Murray Collection, within the Permanent Collection of The Hyde. https://petermax.com/ #artistbirthday #petermax #1960s #museumlife #TheHydeCollection #statueofliberty #MuseumFromHome #happybirthday #popart #iconic

Even during this Pandemic year, some things don’t change. We find that people visit the Museum for the same sorts of reasons they always did; to feel inspired, to gain knowledge, to gain peace of mind, to visit with friends, and to feel connected to ideas and personalities from the past. Because of the Pandemic, we might feel even more drive behind the reasons we visit! In the article linked below, Culture Owl explores the reasons why people visit museums. In the comment...s below this post, please share some of the reasons why you have visited The Hyde Collection. Was your quest successful? Do the situations of this year make these goals even more important in some ways? Most of all, thank you for visiting, and for your support of The Hyde Collection! https://www.cultureowl.com//vi/10-reasons-to-visit-museums https://www.hydecollection.org/visit-reservation/ #art #history #architecture #spirituality #learning #whatsociallife #homeschool #lockdown #reopening #TheHydeCollection #GlensFalls #AdirondackStrong
