This view from the Jefferson Green looking east probably doesn't look familiar to you since much has changed since this photo was taken around 1878. The buildin...g on the far left is the current 160 Main St. immediately east of the current Methodist Church. Over time it housed the Schoharie County Chronical (newspaper), Hubbard's drugstore, Vaughn's store, Handy Drug & Grocery Store (Garfield Ploss owner), Meagley's drugstore, and the post office. It is now owned by Bruce Van Zile Sr. The middle building was a schoolhouse built on the earlier site of the Jefferson Academy. The Academy was first built in 1812 but not finished for a number of years. It was a larger 3 story building and operated until 1852. It was torn down in 1860 and sometime after that, the school shown in this photo was built. It in turn was moved to the east end of town and the Jefferson Union Free School was built on the same site in 1900. Three years later it was reclassified as a "high school". Elementary classes were also held there. That school remained in use until 1953. The building on the right is the Methodist Church in its original configuration, but not on its original site. It had been built on the north side of Main St. west of the Green and moved in 1859 to site now used as the church parking lot. Many additions or renovations have been done to the church overtime making the current structure barely recognizable from this photo. After the school replacing the one shown in this photo was torn down, a new foundation was built on the school site and the church moved once again to that spot. This photo was published in the Schoharie County Historical Review in 1973 and had been provided by Grace Hubbell Ploss. If you are interested in our county history, you can still subscribe to the that historical review.
