We entered all names and drew a winner this morning!... Congratulations @Esperanza Gonzales... you are the winner of a $10 Dunkin Donuts gift card! Check your mailbox and thanks for playing! A special thank you to everyone who shared a photo of their snow-loving children and pups and husbands shoveling! Stay safe and warm!
Yesterday we invited you to share a picture of your snow fun (or not so fun) for the chance to win a $10 Dunkin Donuts gift card! The drawing will be on Friday morning so you still have time to share a picture. Simply add a photo in the comments section... we already have four people in the raffle pool! Good luck and be safe!

This past Saturday, The Open Door experienced something new! We partnered with Chinese Christian Herald Crusade (CCHC) and invited their Chinese-speaking ESL students to join our Spanish-speaking ESL students, where the only commonality between the two groups was English! Because the Chinese Lunar New Year is right around the corner (February 12), we decided that it would be the perfect theme for our event. Our students (and CCHC students) received a hongbao (bright red enve...lope) in the mail that was filled with candy and conversation topics. In the Chinese culture, red is a symbol of energy, happiness and good luck. Sending a hongbao is a way to send good wishes and luck (as well as money). In China, the red envelope is called yasui qian, which means ‘suppressing ghosts money. Those who receive a red envelope are wished another safe and peaceful year. During the actual conversation partners’ event, we shared details about this tradition and other fun facts about the Chinese Lunar New Year 2021 is the year of the Ox and it’s called Lunar New Year because it marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar traditional to many east Asian countries including China and Vietnam. This was such a beautiful day of learning in community, meeting new people and celebrating cultures and traditions. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and participated!
