Connection is key to good mental health and a general sense of wellbeing in the world. The ability to connect in relationships of all kinds is what supports us getting through this time of social isolation and distance. The Positive Mind hosted 3 guest authors over 5 shows centering on connection: Bethany Saltman, author of "Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey Through the Science of Attachment", Charley Wininger LMHC, author of "Listening to Ecstasy: The Transformative Pow...er of MDMA" and Dr. Warren Farrell, author of "The Boy Crisis". Caregiver/child, life partner/spouse, fathers/sons these connections are a part of us, weaving the fabric of who we are and who we are becoming. Kevin and Niseema review some of the key concepts that lead to feeling a greater connection and also share listener questions sparked by the guests over the past few weeks. "Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey Into The Science of Attachment" is Bethany Satlman's exploration to find her own parental attachment style while diving deep into the groundbreaking work of Mary Ainsworth, developmental psychologist and creator of the Strange Situation Procedure. In this she realized something vital: regardless of what we face in adulthood, being the apple of your mother’s or father’s eye will make it all easier to handle. Did you grow up feeling "mom ...always liked you best" though she loved you all equally? Was there a sense of security and peace when you were together after a hard day at school, or in sharing a few play break minutes? Do you look at your own children and see them as you were seen: that no matter what happens, there is that special bond, a delight in being together. Bethany Saltman, mother/daughter/wife/imperfect parent discovered if you've had these experiences you learned, on some level, that relationships matter. Bethany joins Kevin and Niseema for Part 1 of understanding attachment, our most complex yet basic relational behavior, this week on The Positive Mind Radio Show Podcast. #parenting #bethanysaltman #strangesituation #delight #attachmenttheory #secureattachment #strangesituationbook #nonfictionauthor #mentalization https://the-positive-mind.simplecast.com//strange-situatio

Charley Wininger's "Listening to Ecstasy, the Transformational Power of MDMA" aims to demystify the misconceptions that have clouded productive dialogue around this often misunderstood underground party drug known as MDMA. MDMA, along with LSD and psilocybin, has remained a taboo subject but has been thrust into the mainstream due to recent clinical trials that have indicated beneficial therapeutic uses for PTSD, trauma and anxiety. It also enhances relationships, sexuality ...and empathy bringing personal insights. Who better to destigmatize and unpack the wonders of this "love drug" than an accredited expert with 50 years of first-hand experience with psychedelics? And who better to lead the discussion than Kevin O'Donoghue and Niseema Dyan Diemer this week on The Positive Mind. https://the-positive-mind.simplecast.com//listening-to-exs

"At the core of resiliance, there is trust" states Kevin O'Donoghue. And, as Niseema Dyan Diemer points out, "resilence is built through adversity." In this year of unprecidented events from wildfires, COVID and lockdowns to school reopenings and politics, we are faced with many unknowns. How are you bouncing back from the daily anxieties plaguing us both socially and personally? What is your resilience level, have you adapted to adversity pivoting your thoughts to "what can ...I do today to be ready for tomorrow?" This week's Positive Mind Radio Show Podcast invites us to examine how resilience can be found in us all, when we trust and know what we can and cannot change. https://the-positive-mind.simplecast.com//resilience-for-2

In honor of November's Men's Health Awareness Month, Dr. Warren Farrell joins hosts Kevin O'Donoghue and Niseema Dyan Diemer to examine The Boy Crisis. The crisis, in brief, is that boys are growing up without fathers leading them to not only miss out on the father/son bond but, Dr. Farrell believes, leading to lack of social skills, a likelihood to drop out of school, use drugs and experience mental health issues on a broad scale. The roles of men have changed in society: w...e need to adjust our thinking to encourage fathers and sons to be valued for their intrinsic worth as they are, not just as providers or moneymakers. Respecting the roles fathers have embraced with their sons and daughters, especially during COVID, gives us insight as to how nurturing the "father instinct" leads to a more stable home life and society in general. Dr. Warren Farrell is an educator, activist and author of seven books on men and women's issues. His books include The Myth of Male Power, Women Can't Hear What Men Don't Say, Does Feminism Discriminate Against Men? and Why Men Are The Way They Are. https://the-positive-mind.simplecast.com//the-boy-crisis-w

What is freedom to you? Is it found in the memories of a carefree summer past, or recalling a time when you felt fully present doing something you love? How about Independence? Self-reliance, making your own decisions and timetables? These words carry a lot of weight in how we live our lives. Are we free of our past, upbringing, and inner critic? Are we independent if we are living in the shadow of our parents, our relationships or the all too familiar "codependency" with oth...ers? Hosts Kevin O'Donoghue and Niseema Dyan Diemer expand on the concept of declaring emotional independence to gain freedom in our lives. Five tools are offered to help you take steps toward becoming mentally and emotionally independent. Dysthymia is more than "the blues". It is also known as "persistent depressive disorder". At some point every day becomes a gray blank slate. And that seems ...normal. Sufferers can experience symptoms for many years before it is diagnosed, if at all. As a result, people believe that depression is a part of their character, so they may not even discuss their symptoms with anyone. "I'll always be a Debbie Downer" or like Eeyore, looking for something positive but already sure it won't be found. Living with Dysthymia, or with a dysthymic partner or relative, can be overwhelming. But there is hope: talk therapy, self care and early diagnosis can go a long way to offsetting the symptoms and avoid major depression episodes. Join Kevin O'Donoghue and Niseema Dyan Diemer as they explore Dysthymia, and provide tools to work through the gray and into the light. On this week's The Positive Mind Radio Show podcast.
