This week’s #InteriorWednesday brings us to the marvelous residence of interior designer Sheila Bridges, located in one of Harlem’s most iconic landmark buildings, Graham Court. Commissioned by William Waldorf Astor, this Renaissance Revival complex was designed and constructed between 18991901 by the architecture firm Clinton & Russell. The firm was widely renowned for their stately apartment houses, hotels, and early commercial skyscrapers in New York City. Though known a...mongst her clients for creating contemporary interiors, Sheila revealed in an interview with One Kings Lane that her design sensibility skews to those shapes and silhouettes and symmetries of classicism, a taste she cultivated when living in Italy. While the layout of her living room is high traditionalismcomplete with a formal seating arrangement including a silk-upholstered sofa, the designer’s incorporation of pieces from her travels such as red lacquered Burmese offering vessels and an inlaid Moroccan table makes the space come alive. Bridges’ guiding philosophy is to give herself and her clients time to find pieces that will last. Cautioning against blindly filling up the space when decorating interiors, she urges everyone to respect that the design process takes time. The serendipity of gradually finding things along the journey is the fun of it. There’s no hurry.

We wish all of you a peaceful and safe Easter weekend during these unprecedented times. Even though your Easter celebration may be different from previous years, we hope you remain in good health and spirits. Pictured below is an outstanding dinner service presented by Wick Antiques Ltd. at The Winter Show which was a gift to Admiral Lord Nelson from Sir William and Lady Hamilton. It is of English, probably Coalport, manufacture decorated in Naples for Nelson’s 40th birthda...y on 29 September 1798. Each of the twenty-seven pieces is painted in the centre, after designs by Baron de Fages Vaumale with a fouled anchor between palm branches surmounted by a naval coronet and initials HN, the border further painted with trailing oak leaves and with occasional sepia panels depicting views of Alexandria, Aboukir Bay and other Mediterranean scenes, probably after sketches by Cooper Willyams. Some of the dishes are painted on the reverse with a black initial H or gilt M. #TheWinterShow #dinnerservice #plateware #antiques

Our #FridayInspo comes from this enchanting royal pair of figural candlesticks made by silversmith Edward Farrell in 1823. These pieces were part of a massive table garniture ordered by Prince Frederick, Duke of York, through the architect and retailer Kensington Lewis, whose trade card proudly presents him as ‘Silversmith and Jeweller to his R. H. the Duke of York’. The gesturing figures are draped in loincloths, each sitting astride cast alligator bases on orb feet. The co...rnucopia stems are chased and adorned with floral elements surmounted by a drip pan of chased shells while the candle sockets are formed as four dolphins interspersed with foliate flourishes. The pair was produced during the most productive period of Farrell's career, which coincided with his association with the entrepreneur, silversmith, and jeweler Kensington Lewis, whose most important patron was the Duke of York. Farrell supplied Lewis with extravagant sculptural plates in a variety of revival styles that drew largely on seventeenth-century Flemish, German and Italian designs in high relief. Many thanks to our exhibitor Koopman Rare Art (Koopman.Art) for the photograph and expertise! This #InteriorWednesday brings us to the dining room of eminent Standard Oil heirs and passionate philanthropists, Peggy and David Rockefeller, masterfully recreated by interior decorator @frankdebiasi for a special exhibition highlighting the May 2018 Rockefeller estate sale at Christie's New York. In an interview with Architectural Digest, Mr. De Biasi described the challenge of integrating modern art with the kind of antiques dispiritedly described as ‘brown furniture’ re...gardless of the rarity, craftsmanship, or fineness of such objects. When furniture like this is being denigrated and under appreciated, he says, you have to do something to create a space that will appeal to younger collectors, to show that you can use brown furniture in a contemporary setting. The aesthetic and cultural relationship between modern art and antique furniture is eloquently captured in this photograph, which features a Paul Gauguin still life painting and a folding screen by Henri Chagall positioned behind a Chinese export Famille Rose soup tureen flanked by two George II mahogany armchairs, one covered in 18th-century petit and grospoint needlework. In this way, the space reflects the couple’s unwavering enthusiasm for Impressionist, American and Asian art; English and European decorative art; and Chinese, Japanese, Korean and European porcelain.
