SUNY COBLESKILL SUSPENDS 12 FOR COVID VIOLATIONS By Patsy Nicosia SUNY Cobleskill has suspended 12 students for violating its COVID code of conduct with parties both on- and off-campus. Ten of the students are in quarantine in college dorms while the two who live off-campus are quarantining in their homes, President Marion Terenzio said at a press event with SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras Tuesday afternoon.... All students signed pledges, Dr. Terenzio said, and though COVID is new territory for all college students and they’ll sometimes mess up, the 12 will be subject to disciplinary hearings. They are not attending in-person classes. So far, just two SUNY Cobleskill students have tested positive for COVID-19 and they were quickly quarantined. They’re not part of this group of 12, but discovered they were positive after arriving on campus as part of pre-screening requirements. SUNY Cobleskill has also begun pooled testing which allows for a faster turn-around of samples, Chancellor Malatras said; just yesterday, the SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse got permission to begin running the results. We all know there has been no national testing, Chancellor Malatras said, and SUNY Upstate now has the ability to process 100,000 tests a weeksomething that could allow the state to test all on-campus SUNY students in two weeks. Dr. Terenzio praised Amy Gildemeister, Schoharie County’s Public Health director, for working closely with the college to develop and implement its COVID plan. That plan, Chancellor Malatras said, should serve as a model for all colleges and could prevent the kind of outbreak SUNY Oneonta is experiencing. You see what a good plan looks like, he said. When there were problems, you reacted quickly. We see how quickly things can get out of hand The testing process continues to evolve at Cobleskill, Dr. Terenzio said, from initially event testing athletes to now, randomized pooled testing of 12 students, faculty, and staff a day, a number that could increase. Next, she said, they begin to begin testing of its wastewater management system. A spike there would indicate an outbreak is brewing and give the college time to react. See more

It an unprecedented senior year that seemed like it would drag on forever, and then in the end, was over in a flash, local schools said goodbye to the Class of 2020 in historic ceremonies that none of us will ever forget. Middleburgh kicked off the graduations with a drive-through at the Greenville Drive-In a couple of of weeks ago; Sharon, Jefferson and Gilboa followed up outside at home Friday; Cobleskill and Schoharie joined in with multiple rain-soaked ceremonies Saturday, and Worcester wrapped it all up--again in the rain--Sunday afternoon. Photos from all of the graduations--20-plus pages of them--are featured in this week's Times-Journal as we all gather to send the Class of 2020 on its way.

Front Porch Friday - The work I do is really a partnership with the Community. Everyone should get a chance to tell their story. Patsy Nicosia, Times-Journal ...Patsy Nicosia, Editor and Jim Poole, President and Publisher of The Times Journal, have been working together since 1992 when Jim bought the paper, but she began working as a journalist many years before that in the mid 1980’s. Experience, practice, and the natural ability to capture the stories, Patsy writes with consistency and accuracy. But there is something moresomething that comes across during her interviews that can only be described as her dedication to giving everyone a chance to tell their story. Patsy grew up outside of Binghamton and remembers the feeling of seeing her name in print for the first time and she has never lost that memory of how powerful it feels. Each week Patsy gives the opportunity for residents of Schoharie County to see their name in print and to reflect who we are as a Community. Patsy is so busy and on the go all the time that when asked what her favorite memory or story is, she laughed and answered, my favorite is whatever I am currently working on. And then, more reflectively, Patsy thought back to Hurricane Irene in 2011 and how she relied on a stranger with a truck to drive her deep into the flooded area so she could record and photograph the destruction. Patsy knew intuitively that it had to be recorded for the Community not only for that week’s paper in 2011, but for the future generations of Schoharie County who would be amazed. Thank you, Patsy, your skills are much appreciated! The Front Porch Friday Series for Schoharie County strives to provide a fresh look at our County through the words and thoughts of participants who have agreed to sit on their front porch and share their stories. Schoharie County is a very special place and with this Series, our goal is to illuminate the ideas and passions that makes it so special. We wish to thank all participants of this project for their wisdom, insights and time given. #FrontPorchFriday #SchoharieCountyShowAndTell #ItsABeautifulThing
