Supervisor Bosworth and the Town Board are reminding residents that the Town is partnering with New York State to create an Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), to help residents who are having difficulties paying their rent and utilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In order for residents to be eligible, they must meet certain criteria: must reside in the Town of North Hempstead and must not be receiving other federal assistance for the same amounts. New York State’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance will be responsible for evaluating applications and candidates and will be the entity issuing the checks. For more information, please visit: www.northhempsteadny.gov/erap

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Today represents a significant moment of reflection for citizens across our great country, and we encourage each and every one of you to participate in the continued campaign for civil rights in the United States of America.

We would like to remind residents that the Town is hosting a Juneteenth celebration at Martin Bunky Reid Park in Westbury on June 19, 2021, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The theme of the event will be rejoicing and reflecting. The event includes remarks from Theresa Sanders, President of Urban League of Long Island along with music and entertainment from Dena’s School of the Arts; Gary Foote HarlemWorks!, known for his work with the iconic Smokey Robinson; The Gloria Eve Performing... Arts Foundation, known for their specialization in dance, music, and theatre; and Natasha C. Coward, the Empress of R&B. Juneteenth is a holiday which celebrates the emancipation and freedom of slaves in the United States. June 19, 1865, is when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and freed the remaining slaves. This led to the abolition of slavery following the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation two year earlier. Please bring a chair or blanket. For more information, please call 311 or 516-869-6311.
