What has not been addressed in any meaningful way, is that by the end of the year people nationwide will owe tens-of-billions of dollars in back rent that they just can’t pay back, says Diane Yentel, President & CEO at National Low Income Housing Coalition. This could result in #homelessness for many. #homelessnessawareness

If you do just #1Thing that could determine the future of individuals impacted by #domesticviolence and #homelessness, exercise your right to vote today in #Election2020. Every voice and vote matters!

Urban Resource Institute 06.10.2020

On the eve of Election Day, we’re shouting out all URI staff who organized voter education and registration events for clients in our shelters. Individuals experiencing homelessness face many barriers that have historically limited their turnout at the polls. Kudos to the supportive employees at Urban Resource Institute for helping ensure that #homelessvotescount in this important election! #ElectionDay2020 #homelessness #domesticviolence

Domestic Violence impacts everyone, including children. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), as many as ten million children and adolescents witness violence between their parents or caregivers each year in the U.S. Urban Resource Institute is faced with this reality everyday, as on average 65% of our domestic violence shelter residents are children. Nile Johnson decided to do something to help the youth URI serves. He and his Eagle S...cout troop "put into action the values of the scout law". Amongst themselves and through community connections, they created child-size masks for the children in our domestic violence shelters. The hand-crafted masks have been especially useful for school aged kids attending in-person classes. In Nile's own words, "There is always something anyone can do in any situation. Young people can help other young people." URI thanks Nile and his Eagle Scout troop for their initiative, ingenuity, generosity and compassion. You are inspirations for advocates against domestic violence of every age! #DVAware #DVAM2020

Urban Resource Institute is eternally grateful for the generous grant received from PetSmart Charities. This much appreciated funding will make it possible for URI to expand our People and Animals Living Safely (PALS) program into two new shelters, and to serve an additional 140 domestic violence survivors with pets annually. We couldn’t be more pleased about being able to ensure more survivors, children and pets co-live and heal together as a family. We recognize that intervention is critical to ending domestic violence. URI's Abusive Partner Intervention Program (APIP) aims to reduce recurrence of domestic violence among convicted offenders. APIP is anchored in the belief that individuals are capable of change if given the resources needed to do so. Participants take accountability, work to understand possible links between their own trauma and criminal behavior, and develop healthier habits to reduce recidivism. #40YearsOfImpact: In 2002, URI opened Urban Women’s Safe Haven (UWSH), an emergency DV shelter with 120 beds. At the time, this was URI's largest emergency residence allowing us to provide even more secure healing spaces for victims fleeing domestic violence. Eighteen years later, UWSH continues to provide refuge and supportive services for survivors, their children and pets. URI celebrates Roycette Smith as a Frontline Hero! Roycette is an amazing Recreation Specialist at Judy’s Place emergency domestic violence shelter, who plans fun activities for survivors and their children. She holds a special place in her heart for children and considers it a blessing to be able to provide youth, who’ve experienced trauma, with a break from reality. Throughout the pandemic, she’s been certain to take care of herself so that she can continue doing what she loves, providing support and working with children. Urban Resource Institute salutes Roycette for her dedication and for helping lift the spirits of our clients during their difficult time. #FrontlineHeroes #domesticviolence #DVAware

Research has shown that violent behavior typically begins between the ages of 12 and 18. That’s why Urban Resource Institute's Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP) helps break the cycle of violence by helping pre-teens and teen recognize and change unhealthy patterns of behavior before transitioning into adult relationships. Learn more about RAPP and our other domestic violence programs during Domestic Violence Awareness Month: https://bit.ly/URI_RAPP ... #DVAware #DVAM2020 #domesticviolence #IPV #40YearsofImpact See more
