Today is the feast day of Saint Lucia. Saint Lucia was a young Christian girl who was martyred, killed for her faith, in 304 AD. The most common story told about Saint Lucia is that she would secretly bring food to the persecuted Christians in Rome, who lived in hiding in the catacombs under the city. In Scandinavia, pageants portray Saint Lucia wearing a crown with candles as she serves food. Saint Lucia's name is Latin for "light."

Today is Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent. Joy is the focus for the week. Dear God, you know that our hearts long for the joy and gladness promised by life with you. Help us to remember that you are with us always, and that our hearts will rest only when they rest with you. Amen.

Today Catholics celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a celebration of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego. "The Eternal Father ...painting the Virgin of Guadalupe" by Joaquín Villegas (Museo Nacional de Arte, INBA Donación Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, 1991) depicts the God the Father painting the depiction of Our Lady of Guadalupe upon St. Juan Diego's tilma.
