TESTING REDUCES RISKS IN PET ANESTHESIA The practice of veterinary medicine often requires the use of anesthesia. Anesthesia is sometimes used in order to perform even the most routine procedures. Pets don't understand that they need to be calm and still during dental procedures or while an X-ray is being taken. Some pets are so nervous that they won't even allow a veterinarian to perform a physical examination without some type of chemical restraint like a tranquilizer or an...esthetic. Pet owners are often concerned about the risks associated with anesthesia, particularly with an older pet. Even though the anesthesia risks are relatively minor for routine procedures performed on young and healthy pets, there is always the potential for complications. A complete physical exam, laboratory blood tests, as well as other diagnostic procedures enable veterinarians to screen for potential problems and risks before anesthesia is administered. This procedure is relatively inexpensive and well worth the time and money. Studies have shown that about 10 percent of animals involved in pre-anesthetic laboratory testing have had their normal anesthesia protocol altered. In a third of these cases, the procedure was postponed until the problem was corrected. A young healthy pet's blood work may simply consist of a total protein and red blood cell count. Older pets are more likely to have an underlying disease and more extensive blood analysis (serum chemistry) may be necessary. The results obtained from the serum chemistry provide the veterinarian with information on the health and function of the kidneys, liver and other organs. Remember, pre-anesthesia testing is advantageous to your pet's health. We at York Animal Hospital highly recommend it. See more

A giant thank you to these dedicated and hard working ladies! This week has been set aside to celebrate, recognize, and promote the valuable contributions you, as credentialed veterinary technicians, make to the veterinary profession and society. You are integral players on our veterinary healthcare team. You are on the frontlines, compassionately working with clients whose beloved animals need care. You work tirelessly in exam rooms, labs, and operating rooms, putting to ...work your vast technical and scientific knowledge treating and caring for every one of our patients. Your broad skills both professional and personal allow our veterinarians to work more efficiently and effectively. And you do it all with love and a smile, day after day. And this year you’ve been put to the test like never before. Deemed essential personnel, you went to work every day, exposing yourself to the possibility of contracting a virus that has no cure. If that weren’t stressful enough, the pandemic caused a caseload that was nonstop as clients rushed to get their pets caught up on wellness appointments. But your love for animals and the work you do to help them, drove you to keep going. This year, more than ever, we are proud to salute and celebrate you, not just our York Animal Hospital Technicians but all Veterinary Technicians in America!! (pictured below are just some of our team of technicians)

Clipping Your Pet's Nails Pet owners vary in their level of comfort in clipping the nails of their dog, cat, rabbit or bird. But it is necessary to regularly clip nails to help maintain health and comfort. Nails which are uncared for can break or tear, and can affect the animal's ability to move about comfortably or cause the animal to injure itself when scratching. If you are uncomfortable clipping the animal's nails yourself, your vet, vet technician or groomer can do this ...for you. If you decide to do it yourself, here are a few tips: Remember, the nail is living tissue. Do not clip too close to the quick. If this occurs, the animal will experience pain and the nail will bleed. There are two types of nail clippers available: the scissor type (which resembles a traditional scissors) or the guillotine type (which surrounds the whole nail). Both are effective. Choose the one that is most comfortable for you and your pet. Many animals resist nail clipping. One way to get them accustomed to it is to handle their paws or feet from a very early age. Maintain your pet's nail clippers so that they're sharp. A dull blade can crush and fracture the nail, which is painful for your pet. See more
