Yesterday, the New York State Assembly passed A3354-B which grants employees four hours of excused leave per vaccination, to receive the coronavirus vaccine. This bill also provides that an employee shall not be retaliated against by an employer for taking leave to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. During yesterday’s vote on the bill, I was able to explain why I voted in the affirmative on such an important piece of legislation. New Yorkers should look to receive the vaccine in order to slow the spread of this terrible disease, and as lawmakers, it is extremely important that we find ways to incentivize vaccination across our workforce in order to help us restore pre-pandemic normalcy. I'm extremely proud to have co-sponsored and helped pass legislation repealing the commonly-known "Walking While Trans" law which has been used to unfairly target and harass trans women of color here in New York. Under this vague statute, women have been arrested for simply walking home, talking with friends or even standing outside their home, and by repealing this outdated law we are ensuring all New Yorkers are treated equally and fairly by the criminal justice system.
