A great initiative by Erie County Clerk Chris Jacob’s office. Remember to renew your registration locally by mailing your renewal in the green envelope. Envelopes are available at all three Buffalo Ultrasound locations: Williamsville, West Seneca and Kenmore. If you have a fleet, this is definitely a win/win.

On Saturday, October 4th, 2014 Buffalo Ultrasound hosted a conference titled Screening of the Fetal Heart at our West Seneca location. The conference was presented by Jill Beithon, RT, RDMS, RDCS, RVT, also certified in fetal echocardiography; who was recruited by our Technical Director, Marcia Grundtisch, BHS, RDMS, RVT. Jill traveled to Buffalo from Minnesota for the daylong conference which included lecture and hands on scanning. Thirteen ultrasound technologists particip...ated in the daylong conference on a rainy fall day and earned Continuing Education credits for lecture and hands on scanning. A delicious lunch was provided by Lebros. Best Practices and standard of care in Obstetrical Ultrasound now includes detailed imaging of the fetal heart for prenatal ultrasound screening. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) practice guidelines updated in 2013 provide for inclusion of outflow tracts. Buffalo Ultrasound is committed to providing the highest quality of care for our expectant parents and their attending physicians. This commitment includes staff education so our highly trained technologists may confidently recognize congenital heart disease. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect, affecting 4-13 per 1000 births annually. Half of these cases are minor and may easily be resolved with surgery or may even resolve over time. The majority of fetuses with CHD have no known risk factors, however, all pregnancies should be carefully screened for CHD.

Congratulations to Kayla Golibersuch, RT, RDMS, RVT, NT, NB; for recently earning certification in First Trimester Screening: Nuchal Translucency and Nasal Bone Imaging from the Fetal Medicine Foundation. She’s going to need another line just for her acronyms!! Kayla trained to perform this highly specialized ultrasound testing for nearly a year. Very few sonographers hold this distinction throughout the country. Of those certified, most are physicians. Kayla is one of only a handful of sonographers/physicians in WNY qualified to perform First Trimester Nuchal Translucency screening. This first trimester prenatal testing helps physicians assess the fetus risk of having Down’s Syndrome and/or other chromosomal abnormalities.
