Farewell AJ Murello. Best of luck on your transfer to E298. Out of the Bay and into the Hurricane. Even though you were only here for a couple of years, you fit in right away and we felt like we knew you forever. Good luck and godspeed.

FDNY E331 / L173 05.10.2020

We received a call this morning for a person in the water. We are called a water rescue unit, so Firefighter Dmitriy Teplitskiy, Ladder 173, donned his cold w...ater rescue suit. When we arrived on scene, we were trying to scan the water with binoculars to see if we could see anyone in the water. It’s an open area of the bay with a lot of kayakers and fishermen that go out, so it's a fairly large area where we were trying to find if someone was in trouble. Engine 331 was flagged down by a civilian that saw someone in a kayak struggling in the water. They radioed us to confirm the location and we proceeded to them. Firefighter Teplitskiy went to the water’s edge and saw an overturned kayak with an individual clinging to the side of the kayak. It was partially submerged and the person looked very tired. There was a pretty moderate current pulling the person away. Firefighter Teplitskiy was tethered with a rope and got into the water. He swam out to the kayaker. He was able to secure the person and the kayak in one motion. He gave the signal and he was pulled in. While this went on, we also had another Firefighter start to don his cold water suit in the event we needed another swimmer. Once the kayaker was back on shore, Engine 331 did a patient assessment. The individual was very grateful and uninjured, says FDNY Lieutenant John-Paul McCloskey, Ladder 173, who operated on scene of a water rescue this morning at Cross Bay Blvd/North Channel Bridge in Queens. Lt McCloskey says, The members are great at their job and all know what they’re doing so as a Lieutenant, I wanted to make sure everyone was doing their job safely. My job is to make sure everyone goes home safe. We’re here know matter what, we’re always going to be here, that's our job. FDNY urges New Yorkers to take precautions when kayaking and boating in the 520 miles of water surrounding our city. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, and never take unnecessary risks. Always wear life jackets, and follow proper safety precautions at all times. See more #FDNYSmart tips at fdnysmart.org

Remembering Eugene Bucky Bucalo

FDNY E331 / L173 06.09.2020

My Dad EUGENE "BUCKY" BUCALO passed 3 months ago today from 9/11 related cancer. In a few hours, January 22nd he will spend his 1st birthday in Heaven. My Dad ...was on the job 37 years, he loved his job, he loved all the guys he ever worked with, he loved deep with a heart of gold. He was retired on 9/11 but they all went in and worked as if they never left. Days, weeks, months. Who was to know there was more horror & suffering to come. Everyday I see another Hero gone or remembered. God bless them all, I know He has a special place for all our Heroes. Happy 1st Heavenly Birthday Daddy Eugene V Bucalo 01/22/1932 - 10/21/2019 See more

He was the heart of the firehouse. He always had a good word to say, was always willing to teach and share his knowledge and experience, and he was always laug...hing. He set an example for everybody and we all followed. He was my Lieutenant and I was his Captain, and I looked up to him. I respected what he did. Obviously he will be sorely missed, says FDNY Captain Thomas McHugh, Squad 41, remembering Lieutenant Brian J. Sullivan. Lieutenant Sullivan suffered a fatal heart attack on Saturday, August 10th at his home in Monroe, NY, after responding to a kitchen fire in a Bronx apartment during his 24-hour tour of duty. He is the 1,153rd member of the FDNY to die as a result of injuries sustained in the line-of-duty. He leaves behind his wife Irene, and two daughter Nicole, 22, and Samantha, 17. The FDNY Foundation joins the FDNY in mourning the line of duty death of Lieutenant Brian J. Sullivan. Donations to benefit the children of Lieutenant Sullivan can be made by visiting www.fdnyfoundation.org/donate/ and selecting Lt. Brian Sullivan’s Children’s Education Fund from the drop-down menu.
