GRAND ISLAND RESIDENCE SPARED FROM GARAGE FIRE At 4:35 PM on Christmas Day, December 25th, Grand Island firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire in an attached garage on Cardinal Lane. Fire Chief Mark Sadkowski stated that initial fire suppression efforts by the homeowner and an Erie County Sheriffs Deputy were substantially successful and of great assistance to follow-up operations by the GIFC. As a result, there was no penetration into the residence itself,... and the fire was knocked down within five-minutes of the first engines arrival. Nevertheless, total damage was estimated at $5,000 to the structure and $5,000 to a vehicle parked in the garage. The cause was found to be improper disposal of fireplace ashes. There were no injuries reported. Grand Island Fire officials caution those who use wood burning fireplaces and stoves to use metal containers outside and away from buildings for ashes since they can remain live and dangerous for many hours despite their appearance. This simple precaution can save property damage and/or serious injury to occupants. All participating units returned in service by 5:11PM. Ray Pauley Public Information Officer

Did you know that cooking is the number 1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries?!? As we reflect on Fire Prevention Week 2020, here's some helpful tips to be safe in the kitchen! - Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. In fact, Thanksgiving is the leading day for fires involving cooking equipment.... - The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. - Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. - If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly and stay in the home. - Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it’s cool. - Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop. - Loose clothing can hang down onto stove burners and catch fire. Wear short, close-fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. - Have a kid-free zone of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. See more

TWO NEW PARAMEDICS BOLSTER GRAND ISLAND FIRE COMPANY ALS CAPABILITIES Fire Chief Mark Sadkowski reports that the addition of two new Paramedics to the GIFC has increased this ALS team to sixteen! Katie Ireland and Tracy Yund joined the GIFC on June 6th, 2018 as the first EMS only members. They are well suited as Paramedics since Katie is an attorney and Tracy is a nurse. This solid foundation enabled them to complete their EMT qualifications (150-190 hours) in March 2019, a...nd just earned their NYS Paramedic certification (1200-1900 hours) earlier in September 2020. Completion of these advanced courses is a tremendous sacrifice given the demands of their families and careers. Please join us in congratulating them on their achievement and steadfast willingness to serve the people of this community. Congratulations Katie and Tracy! PHOTO: by Ray Pauley Tracy Yund and Katie Ireland receive congratulations from EMS Capt. Rob Meyer and Fire Chief Sadkowski

GRAND ISLAND ACE HARDWARE DAMAGED BY NEARBY VEHICLE FIRE At 12:35 PM on Friday, July 3rd, Grand Island firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the Ace Hardware store parking lot at 1889 Whitehaven Rd. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Mathes reported that a pickup truck was fully engulfed in flames when Engines #2, 3, 4, 5, and LT6, along with fire suppression crews arrived on location. Because the burning truck was parked next to the building itself, some exposure damage was co...nsidered inevitable. Assistant Fire Chief John Podlucky reported the fire was under control at 12:55 PM with attention to hot spots and overhaul underway. Meanwhile, Sheridan Park Fire and City of Tonawanda Fire Department provided mutual aid support. Damage to the truck was estimated at $5000, while damage to Ace Hardware was limited to $5000 due to quick response. There were no injuries reported. The occupant, a new EMS member of the GIFC, was able to safely exit her burning home prior to the arrival of firefighters. Fire Chief Mark Sadkowski reported that the basement and first floor were fully involved when E-2, E-4, E-5, LT-6 and fire suppression crews arrived ...on location. Meanwhile, Sheridan Park VFD assisted with exterior aerial operations at the scene while Brighton VFD and the City of Tonawanda FD also provided mutual aid support. The fire was knocked down by 12:09 AM (Monday) when a few hot spots were still being attended to and extensive overhaul commenced.
