"Most art galleries have found a way to elevate their artists and reach collectors through digital programing and online viewing rooms throughout the coronavirus pandemic. The Japan Society Gallery in New York has also turned to the digital world, but it has sought to find a more active way to fulfill its larger mission of creating a meeting point between the cultures of Japan and the U.S." -Barron's on our current exhibition From Here to There. Japan Society Gallery Director Yukie Kamiya & Assistant Curator Tiffany Lambert worked together towards responding to the challenging conditions of our current moment for traditional curatorial practicelimited ability to travel, gather, and experience art onsite. From Here to There, in which the projects of three emerging artists, #NobutakaAozaki, #HanakoMurakami, and #AkiSasamoto are presented in a digital space. The alternative format offers new opportunities to experienc...e the work not otherwise possible in a physical space. Tomorrow 10/20 at 9:30PM EDT Kamiya will offer her insight to The Japan Foundation, Manila's free online talk for their @Rethinking Curatorial Work: Curatorial Development Webinar, which will offer perspective on how curatorial practice can rethink its form to adapt to COVID-19, rather than merely replicating traditional exhibitions in an online space. From Here to There artist Hanako Murakami’s Imaginary Landscapes is a series of experiments created by developing previously unused vintage photographic plates and paper collected from around the world. The artist refers to her process as an inner voyage that merges traces of past contexts, places, and technologies into the present. Her contemporary experiences, when presented in the digital space, are immersive, complicating fact, fiction, and time’s illusory nature as a l...inear experience. Experience her works at http://ow.ly/ihTk30rf0GQ where our digital presentation highlights their materiality by allowing you to experience them at an exaggerated scale, beyond what is physically possible in person. Stay tuned for more projects from Murakami, as well as #NobutakaAozaki and #AkiSasamoto, as our exhibition site updates on 10/22. #HereThereJS #HanakoMurakami #ImaginaryLandscapes
