Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory 05.05.2021

Climate science tells us how the world is changing. Climate art shapes how we choose to respond. Artists Zaria Forman, James Prosek, Jeff Frost, and Caroline Juang talk about how art can engage us emotionally and inspire action on #climatechange: https://www.ldeo.columbia.edu//emotional-appeal-how-art-ca : Whale Bay, Antarctica No. 4, 2016. Zaria Forman uses soft pastels to recreate undeveloped landscapes that are increasingly at risk due to climate change. "I was looking for something more meaningful to imbue in my work, something that was more than just a pretty picture for somebody’s wall," she said. Image courtesy of Zaria Forman.

Lamont biological oceanographer and PhD student Elise Myers is studying the microbial life of the Hudson River, including how environmental degradation disproportionately harms underserved communities. "One of the best things we can do right now is to address these wrongs, stop them, and also try to make the system more equal. That means minimizing pollution and really understanding where there is more exposure." Lamont engineer Nick Frearson builds instruments that help scientists collect vital data in Antarctica, the deep sea, and at the top of volcanoes. Frearson dives into what it’s like to work in Antarctica, why we need more information about ice sheets, and why he loves building new gadgets: https://www.ldeo.columbia.edu//nick-frearson-designs-devic High school students: Check out Nick Frearson's Out of Thin Air Maker Workshop. You'll learn how to build a C02 sensor and Ardu...ino-based microcontroller to monitor emissions and understand importance of data to science and policy: https://learn.ei.columbia.edu/c/out-thin-air-maker-workshop : Frearson stayed in this tent in the middle of East Antarctica, near the South Pole, for six weeks. The average temperature outside was -35F, but the tent’s dark color absorbed the sunlight (which was shining 24 hours a day at that time of year), keeping the inside of the tent above freezing. Emissions from coal-fired power plants in China are seeding the North Pacific Ocean with metals including iron, a nutrient important for marine life, according to a new study co-authored by Lamont postdoc Paulina Pinedo-González. The particles, borne on long-distance winds, could alter the balance of carbon in the atmosphere, or change the ocean ecosystem, though it’s unclear whether it would be for better or worse.
