When I was a kid, my grandmother put me in an acting class at Studio Arena Theatre. Who remembers that place? My friend from class was in a play being done there. My grandmother brought me to the theatre to watch my friend and support. That play was Fences, by August Wilson. I knew at that moment, I wanted do Theatre. I wanted to move people, the way this play moved me. The story was about about a father, who happened to be a fantastic baseball player. He couldn’t crack into... the MLB and break racial barriers that prevented him. Though his life had its struggles, especially in the evidence of his relationships with his family, he becomes the first black bus driver in Pittsburg. August Wilson’s portrayal of everyday Americans, has always dug deep into my heart. He wrote about lives years before mine existed, but his works can be very much related to today. I encourage all of you, but challenge our Senior Theatre company’s to really make an effort to dive into Black plays. I ask now, during Black History month, but also to make sure you are including these amazing playwrights in your everyday research. As actors, we must constantly be educating ourselves on lives of the past as well as works of art in the present. Here are some choices that I have read or plan to read: Fences by August Wilson Pipeline by Dominique Morisseau Slave Play by Jeremy O. Harris He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box by Adrienne Kennedy A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry Tambourines to Glory by Langston Hughes Fairview by Jackie Sibblies Drury Ain’t No Mo by Jordan E. Cooper https://www.google.com//theater/black-playwrights-theater.

Hi Guys! Just wanted to remind everyone, Miss Dominique is conducting an audition technique workshop for November! She is a rising star in the WNY Theatre community as well as on a national level. She has extensive experience auditioning. This is an amazing opportunity! This workshop is only for middle and high schoolers. The workshop is $80, for every Saturday in November from 12 to 2 PM. For students in private or group lessons, or in the theatre company, you get a 10% dis...count on the total of what you’d spend this month. You will be auditioning for Matilda and/or Hairspray depending on your age. We will begin right from the beginning of the audition process, including how to get headshots and create a resume. Each week you will follow the next step in the audition process. Please let me know ASAP if you plan on taking the workshop. There is limited space for this!!! Thanks so much! Dominique is a professional actress from Buffalo and SUNY Fredonia alumni. Recent credits include: Ragtime (Sarah *Artie Award Winning Performance), West Side Story (Maria), Little Shop of Horrors (Ronnette), Late in the Evening World Premiere (Mysterious Woman), FirstDate (Alison/Lauren/Ens.), Avenue Q (Gary Coleman).
