"My mom prayed I would follow in the footsteps of my Vietnamese cousins and become a pharmacist. And yet, she was the one to enroll me in drawing classes and drive me to downtown LA to scour discount fabric stores on her day off from the nail salon. And even though I don't think she fully understood that someone could go to school for costume design, she never gave me any pushback. Furiously driven by the (perhaps unhealthy) self-imposed pressure to not let my mom down, I hit... the ground sprinting when I got to NYU. I interned on my first Broadway show at 19, and I was completely enamored...but it was the people I interacted with that made me fall in love with this industry. I treasure the connections I've made with all of our costume-related vendors in the garment district. From fabric and trim stores, to feather purveyors, fabric painters, costume makers, and cobblers, these vendors are the backbone of the Broadway costume industry. These pictures give the briefest glimpse into the magical daily workings of these small businesses. These vendors are also an amazing example of NYC's melting pot, with many being immigrant-owned and hailing from places like Korea, Iran, India, and Italy, to name a few. Even though I'm a recent addition to the costume assistant team, being a part of this company and working with the great Catherine Zuber has been an immeasurable gift. Cathy has welcomed me into her creative process with open arms and it has been such a joy witnessing her understanding of character, editing eye and love for design firsthand. She is an undisputed master of her craft (not to mention a 7 time Tony-winning living legend!), and I have to pinch myself everyday as we pore over fabrics and fitting photos for upcoming companies of Moulin Rouge. I know we're all counting down the days until the lights go up at the Hirschfeld again, and I'm especially excited to have my mom in the audience for that big reopening. Windmills and elephants and gilded love nests might be a far cry from pharmaceuticals, but somehow, I think she'll still be proud." - James Nguyen, Assistant Costume Designer #AAPIHeritageMonth #CostumeDesign #MoulinRougeBroadway
