THESPIAN TUESDAYS: Susan Glaspell is a prominent figure in the history of modern American theatre, yet she is often overlooked by her male contemporaries. Born in Davenport, Iowa, she originally was a journalist after graduating from college, but began writing fiction after moving back to her hometown. She met her husband, George Cram Crook, forming a literary circle in Davenport. They moved to New York City, kickstarting her career in theatre, and they founded the Provinceto...wn Players, the first modern American theatre company. Today, Glaspell is seen as the first important female playwright and a pioneer figure in feminist writing. Thespian Tuesdays is a campaign run by NPTC as a part of the On Her Shoulders project, which spotlights the impact of women in theatre history. THESPIAN TUESDAYS: Mercedes de Acosta was a Cuban-American playwright, novelist, and poet. Out of twelve plays she had written, only four were produced. de Acosta was well-known for her romantic relations with Hollywood and Broadway stars, having been in relationships with Greta Garbo, Isadora Duncan, and Marlene Dietrich, among others. She published a tell-all memoir that brought fierce criticism by her previous lovers, as she mentioned them by name, and led to public contem...pt against de Acosta and her work. She had lived a fierce live of desire, one where she stood up for what she believed in.
