!!!!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!!!!! We have just received this update from DVA regarding stopping driving lessons and driving tests from 6 pm 16 October TO ALL APPROVED DRIVING INSTRUCTORS AND APPROVED MOTORCYCLES INSTRUCTORS... Driving Instruction You will have seen in the media that the Executive has clarified that driving instructors are to be included on the list of close contact services and therefore those businesses must close this evening for the next 4 weeks in order to help stop the spread of COVID 19. I know that this will be of huge concern to you, given that you have taken considerable steps to deliver your services safely. Financial Support Like other close contact services which have been closed, you will be able to avail of financial support schemes being put in place during the time that they are closed. Information about those schemes can be found at www.nibusinessinfo.co.uk//coronavirus-localised-restrictio - this scheme is being extended to all areas from Monday 19 October. Driving Tests Given this decision, Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has confirmed that driving tests will also not take place over this period of increased restrictions. We know that this will cause considerable inconvenience and frustration for you and for your pupils, given that the high demand we have already seen from the previous lockdown period. However this decision has been taken in order to protect lives and prevent our health service from becoming overwhelmed. Customers with tests booked within the next 4 weeks, will now have their appointments cancelled and refunded. We will contact those whose driving tests are to let them know how they can reschedule their appointments. And we’ll also let you know what your pupils will need to do. We are planning to open up the booking system for February for these impacted customers only. And further appointments will be made available in November, December and January as we work to increase capacity by recruiting additional examiners. These slots, when they are released, will also only be available to these impacted customers. We are also conscious that some key workers may be within this group and we will be setting up a process to give them priority appointments and we will contact these customers directly. We know these are worrying times for you all, and will continue to work with you over the coming weeks. DVA/DFI Statement Regarding the full re-launch of the driving test booking system after we contacted them about your concerns. the DFI responded with the follo...wing statement, A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure said: The Driver & Vehicle Agency’s (DVA) online booking system for driving tests has now opened for bookings. By 3:00pm today Monday 5 October thousands of online bookings had been made for October, November and December, this includes tests already booked for key workers and those customers who had their tests cancelled due to lockdown. As expected, demand for the service has been high and it has been necessary to use queuing software to ensure the availability of the system. However, this has resulted in some customers having to wait before being admitted to the service to make a booking. To help meet demand, the DVA has been releasing additional test slots at all test centres throughout the day and they will soon be releasing further driving test slots for January. Additional slots for November and December will also be released nearer the time when staffing availability is confirmed as DVA continues to recruit more examiners to increase testing capacity as quick as possible. The DVA acknowledges that learner drivers are keen to take their driving tests at the earliest opportunity and is working hard to maximise the availability of test slots. However all driving test services across these islands are experiencing high demand with longer than usual waiting times. Like all public facing services, the Covid restrictions mean that the DVA has had to adapt its services to ensure that they can be provided safely and they would ask customers for their patience if possible at this difficult time. The DVA continues to work to minimise disruption but wants to be honest with the public, that the challenges of closure due to public health advice and the restrictions for the last number of months, has resulted in many people having to wait. We also have to be honest, that there is no easy immediate fix while we continue to bring services back on that are in high demand and while the public health advice remains in place. All of us must put the health and safety of staff and customers first. DVA continues to restore services as quickly and safely as possible but wants to be realistic, honest and upfront with the public about the challenges that continue to face the return of public services during this challenging time. DVA and DFI thank staff and customers for their patience and above all their compliance with public health restrictions.
