ANNUAL SCBA FLOW TESTING PERFORMED This past week (05/26/2021 & 05/27/2021), Municipal Emergency Services (@mes.fire / mesfire.com) performed our annual Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) flow testing. At this time every year, all of the Department’s SCBA, 54 total air packs, undergo rigorous testing to ensure they work properly under immediate danger to life and health (IDLH) conditions, as required by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the Na...tional Fire Protection Association (NFPA). While our SCBAs are undergoing testing, they will also have routine preventive maintenance and repairs preformed. This is done to keep them up to a high standard we expect of these extremely important pieces of equipment. The Port Jervis Fire Department recently applied for a sizable grant through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program (AFG) in an effort to upgrade our aging cascade system and packs.

WE STAND WITH PRIDE Our own, Richard R. Senkiew, a career firefighter with Ladder 42, FDNY, was involved in a rescue Friday night at a 2 Alarm fire in Hunts Point, the Bronx. According to FDNY (Instagram) reports Earlier this evening (Friday night 04/30/2021), FDNY members responded to Hunts Point Avenue in the Bronx for reports of a house fire with residents trapped. As the first arriving unit on scene, Ladder 42 encountered thick black smoke pushing out through the fron...t door with fire out the window of both floors in the rear of the house. FDNY Captain Joseph McConnell of Ladder 42 led his interior firefighting team comprised of Firefighters Richard Devine and Richard Senkiew past a clutter condition and fire on both floors of the home to search for the missing occupant. Firefighter Devine navigated high heat and black-out conditions on the upper floors without the protection of a hoseline and was able to locate the resident following a search of the upper bedrooms. Ladder 42 members converged on the location and shielded the occupant from heat and fire as they brought the person outside where EMTs from FDNY Station 55 rendered life-saving medical care. The patient was transported to Lincoln Hospital in serious condition. Congratulations to Captain McConnell, Firefighter Devine & Firefighter Senkiew for a job well done! Rich began his firefighting career as a volunteer in the Port Jervis Fire Department, as a member of Neversink Engine Company No. 1, joining in September 2005, at 21 years old. He went on to serve as a chauffeur and as a lieutenant in his Company. Rich also served for a period of time as an Emergency Medical Technician with the Port Jervis Volunteer Ambulance Corps. He is a current member of the PJFD Special Operations Squad, as a part of our Accident Victim Extrication Team and as a former SCUBA diver. Rich first joined FDNY in the EMS Division before continuing on in his career as an FDNY firefighter. We, the members of the Port Jervis Fire Department stand proud with Rich and our brothers and sisters of the FDNY. Rich is 2nd from left in photo. Photo obtained through @FDNY

The Port Jervis Fire Department is excited to announce being recipients of the following grants: 1. These new tools will be battery powered versus our high pressure hydraulic tools currently in service. DiBernardo Memorial Foundation (The Joey D. Foundation) grant in the amount of $4,400.00, earmarked towards training select PJFD firefighters to be certified to train other firefighters (train the trainer) on our recently acquired personal safety systems, 1 of 32 Foundation grants to be awarded in 2020. This award follows our 2019 award in the amount of $12,000.00 to purchase personal safety systems known as ‘bail out bags’. This grant is in conjunction with the Leary Firefighters Foundation and an official press release will be provided in the near future. The Port Jervis Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to thank Valerie Maginsky, Director of the Port Jervis Community Development Agency (CDA). Valerie has co-authored these grants and other grants over the last 8 years that benefited our Department and City, and she is a tireless supporter, who is always seeking avenues to improve our Department and City through grant opportunities.
