Artist Martine Gutierrez will be taking over our Special Projects Gallery on Saturday, August 15. In this takeover, see select large-scale photographic prints from Indigenous Woman, a 124-page magazine replete with fashion spreads, product advertisements and a Letter from the Editor all dedicated, as Gutierrez describes it, to the celebration of Mayan Indian heritage, the navigation of contemporary indigeneity and the ever-evolving self-image. Through the style and constru...ct of the glossy magazine, Gutierrez subverts conventional ideals of beauty to reveal how deeply sexism, racism, transphobia and other biases are embedded in our culture. This exhibition will be on view August 15 December 13, 2020. Martine Gutierrez, Queer Rage, Imagine Life-Size, and I'm Tyra, p. 66-67 from Indigenous Woman, 2018. C-print mounted on Sintra, 42 x 63 inches (106.7 x 160 cm). Edition of 8, plus 2AP.
While we aren't able to add personal items to our Museum ofrenda this year, Rockwell staff snapped pictures of items that honor the memory of a loved one to place on our virtual ofrenda.

It is also my ambition to forge a connection between the art world and my community. While it is my desire for Indigenous Woman to provide some sustenance for my fellow millennial non-binary transwomen of color, I sincerely hope that all audiences will find the work compelling and captivating. I believe it is possible to create an empathetic and supportive society, but it requires that we all educate ourselves, that we learn to be allies and activists who understand our own ...privilege. Mutual understanding has the power to change the world. Martine Gutierrez in Letter from the Editor, Indigenous Woman The Rockwell is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and visitors to the Museum can explore art about the American experience the people, land and ideas that shape America through the eyes of American artists. Martine Gutierrez, Body En Thrall, p112 from Indigenous Woman, 2018. C-print mounted on Sintra, 90 x 60 inches (228.6 x 152.4 cm). Edition of 2, plus 1 AP.
